Stats on gun crime in the House of Commons library.
Most gun crime comes from handguns, imitation firearms and air guns. Rifles are at 1%. 0.50 calibre probably account for 0% of that 1%.
Public concern about gun crime ? I am sure they are more concerned with moped riding thugs with knives and hammers...I see no attempt to ban hammers. Or people riding pillion on mopeds...

Just this past year, the Rand Corporation released a report identifying 11 potential terrorist scenarios involving Los Angeles International Airport.

In one scenario, "a sniper using a .50-caliber rifle fires at parked and taxiing aircraft." The report concludes: "We were unable to identify any truly satisfactory solutions" for such an attack.

This is exactly what the FBI learned in 1993 at Waco when Branch Davidians fired a Barrett .50-caliber sniper rifle at them.

What would be the difference between a .50BMG and .308Win or .223Rem, other than a slightly larger hole in the plane?? A quick Google Earth look at LAX and there there are dwellings/buildings at just 300m from the nearest runway, both well within range of most rifle calibres for even a mediocre shooter. Hell you can even drive up 'Aviation Boulevard' and be within 30m of a plane taking off, you could pile rounds into a cockpit with a shotgun, pistol or .22 and bring a plane down!

If you or I were a terrorist or madman, we could think up all sorts of ways to carry out our attack. The truth is, a lot of them would be too difficult to arrange so we'd fall back on using a truck/knife/home made bomb etc.

The Governments are helpless to stop these types of attack, so all they can do to generate some positive PR for themselves and make it look like they're keeping us safe is think up far-fetched scenarios themselves and then ban whatever weapons they use in their scenarios. That's what's going on here.

'Thank you for writing to me regarding offensive & dangerous weapons.

I have made representations on your behalf to Nick Hurd MP, Minister of State for Policing & the Fire Service, in order to ask him to look into your concerns.

I will be in touch upon receipt of a response.'

Note that the consultation refers specifically to .50 calibre anti-material rifles and MARS (VZ-58) rifles - using two pulls of the trigger.

Certainly it refers to the MARS design but this is what ought to be appreciated:

"We are also proposing to prohibit ownership of rapid firing rifles, such as ..."

That still leaves the gate wide open for them to raise lever release rifles with the general all-encompassing term "rapid firing rifles, such as ..."

Something that's more popular left a lone in 1986/1997 ?

Yes there is that, I did specifically ask for his views on the matter though.

Just received a response from my MP this morning:

"Thank you for contacting me regarding Government's consultation on offensive weapons.

I have written on your behalf to the Home Secretary in order to forward on your concerns about reclassifying these firearms and the impact it could have on the UK's shooting community.

I will write to you again once I have received a reply. please do not hesitate to contact me if I might be of any further assistance in the meantime."
