Re: Help needed filling in plot sheets

I have followed this thread with a lot of interest, I use plot sheets for anything over 200 yards and all my competitions however I would be the first to admit I am not using them properly. If we could get a couple of experienced plot sheet people who were happy to spend a couple of hours on the range giving 1:1 or 1:2 tuition would be anyone be interested in a F-B(UK) mornings shooting?

I am not sure how workable this would be but it must be worth looking at assuming we can find a couple of people prepared to give up some time, plus find a day that suits all and ideally is not pouring with rain.

I would definately be up for a mornings shoot with some plot sheet coaching/mentoring...

Let me know when and I'll see what I can do ;)

also, let me know if theres anything i can do to help organise, i know it can sometimes be a mammoth task!

Thank you for the offer, do you want to start a new thread and see who would be interested in attending and also if anyone would be able to do the coaching side of things?

Was at Bisley on Sunday for our annual long range competition - It's the only chance I get to shoot at 900 and 1000...so thought I'd take the opportunity to try some more plotting. The 'warm up/zero' at 900 went well, and I scored a reasonable (for me) 46 - I didn't bother keeping a card as was concentrating on the wind. The conditions were good, and although the wind was playing a few tricks (gusts and drops), it was pretty consistant.

Then went back to 1000 - I planned to plot the elevation only, and do the wind after. The 'A' sighter was a 5, and the 'B' was a 4 - was looking good.

But then I found that I was wanting to change the windage virtually every shot (not used to 1000), and got into a right muddle - I gave up plotting at about shot 3, and stopped noting adjustments shortly after - I started going from one side of the bull (in the 4) to the other, and eventually lost track of where my sights were, and put shot 9 out into the 3  - I finished with a poor 42.

It's not put me off plotting, but I think that it is something that will take time and practice :)

The other thing I learned, from looking at the pics, is that my shooting jacket has shrunk over the last few years :-P

I know how changeable it was on Sunday. My team was shooting in the Catastrophe match (TR at 900, 1000 and 1100), and at 1100 the wind was changed for every single shot of the team of 8 shooters firing 10 to count.

Keeping track of what's on the sights, and particularly what wind is on the gun, is obviously essential whether plotting or not. The typical sequence TR shooters use for recording the sight settings during individual shooting is as follows:
  • Elevation changes are recorded on the scorecard immediately after making the change.
Since it is rarely necessary to make elevation changes while in the aim, and rare to make more than one elevation change for a particular shot, recording the change immediately means one less thing to remember.
  • Windage changes are recorded immediately after firing the shot.
Wind changes may take place while in the aim, and potentially several times for a particular shot, so there's no point recording the value until the shot has left the rifle. At this time you are waiting for the target to be marked, so you can use the time to get ahead with the paperwork. Any 'shot call' (high/question-mark/snatch etc) can be recorded at the same time. If I'm plotting a wind graph, at this time I also mark a tiny cross on the graph at the point which corresponds to the wind that was actually on the gun, which helps to plot the graph point more quickly when the target comes up (and helps to identify if you are consisitently under or over calling, and by how much).
Making this routine absolutely second-nature will help you to keep track of what is on the gun at any point in time with minimal distraction from shooting and watching the wind. If you do choose to plot then recording the settings quickly and accurately is a pre-requisite, but recording your changes is important regardless.

Thanks Rox - excellent advice as usuall :good:

I think I'll concentrate on getting this routine sorted first - and actually plot, post shoot for the next few times.

I saw other shooters at the top end of Stickledown...had I known you were there, I'd of come and said hello....

Cheers,

That's an excellent approach.

I wasn't actually there - I have to run the team remotely from Belgium at the moment. They don't seem to do any worse without me around :? but that's hopefully due to having established excellent discipline and well-trained stand-ins 8-)
