Well that's rather nice TJC. I am wondering though, what on earth is that gadget on the side for, some kind of laser perchance?

Thats a Red dot sight on a 45' mount for CQB quick target aqquisition. Just in case those bunnies catch you unawares! Pretty smart set up there.

I see. Why would a chap need that then? Is the scope not very good that a second system is required? Sorry fro being obtuse, but I don't see the point. *confused*

Close quarters 'snap' shooting, damage to primary, fogging/dirt... lots of reasons.

Because he can! tongueout

Simply put - scope zeroed for one distance (long) and the red-dot for another (short).

Ha. No problem in asking. It is not a rare setup and is frequently used by hunters and competition shooters. Scopes tend to be most useful for distance shooting, in this case it is used mainly for 50-100 yrds. For more rapid near target engagement a red dot optic works best. Ultimately, it is hard to find (at an affordable price) a scope that works well at short ranges with red dot capable speed and yet has the magnification for a further out.

So let's assume you are out shooting bunnies and normally get shots off at say 75-yrds plus. At that range you need a scope more than a red dot. If one pops up at 15 yrds you tilt the rifle a few degrees and the wider FOV provided by a red dot gives you a better optic platform for the opportunity. An alternative setup might be a red dot with a flip to side magnifyer behind. I have used those in the past but found the magnifyer didn't provide enough mag for longer ranges.

In the US there are many competitions that force a shooter to make 100-yrd shots and then almost immediately transition to a shot inside 30-yrds. This is also increasingly common in bolt action competitions and you will now see many practical shooters employ a red dot alongside a a high end S&B scope.

So in answer to you question, it is less about the scope not being good enough (i do admit there are better and the Leupold Mk 6 is one but that was outside my budget at $2k and hard to import into the UK), and more about how i intend to employ the rifle.
