I dont think they ever actually confirmed the calibre. It was narrowed down to .22 hornet and .22 WMR.

I have seen a home made IRA single shot 12 bore shotgun. Pretty much like a crutch. It had a telescoping action of about 2". It was placed in the shoulder and pulled back 2" into it, pushing the cartridge back onto a fixed firing pin.

Does anyone know which company made it? Also off topic but before the dear act of 1963 didn't hornet used to be used for Roe and the like? Given the time frame and the kind of person the Jackel was, that makes me think more of Hornet. Though 22 wmr can be punchy. Which do you believe Breacher would make a better assassins gun then? I'm thinking it could go either way. And this was just asked a theoretical as in, the realms of the situation shown in Day of the Jackal. I've only seen the remake myself. Its on my to-do list to watch the original at some point. Its probably in netflix or amazon somewhere teanews .

There is this, and it keeps us fairly close to the topic.

Well they're not .22 hornet, no taper to the case. And as sixshot6 says, they're rimfire.

Yes - rimfire in that pic.

In the book they hint at a centrefire by refer reloading / handloading cartridges etc - probably thats where the Hornet came into it.
