When I look at mounted guns like that I always think; ok, I get the gun bit, I can see the barrel and breech, etc; but what is all the other stuff bolted to the frame work?

I like the look of the cartridges. What are the "blue" shells?

Most fun thing I've shot? I don't think I can narrow it down to one firearm. Everything I shot in the US was fun, so I'll count the whole trip as, the most fun thing I've shot. I got to shot stuff I never thought I'd get my hands on, including; handguns, self-loaders in all shapes and sizes, full-auto rifles, belt-fed machine guns as well as an Exploding Nazi... Yeah, you heard right.

I'm glad it's not just me who think that!

Not at all Dougan, I've fired the Bren gun when I was an Army Cadet and later in the Regular Army the LMG 7.62 version, they were both a lot of fun to shoot as well. As long as they brought a smile to your face or you had a laugh doing it everything is good.

Blu
I had a crack with an LSW on rock'n'roll mode as an air cadet. Which was a good laugh, as I watched the middle of the Fig 11 gradually disintegrate under a concentrated hail of 5.56 ball!

Playing with a Minimi was good fun - sadly it was only on the DCCT simulated training range.

Shooting .50'' Browning Machine gun, 5.56 SAW and M79 grenade launchers in competition at Camp Robinson Arkansas as part of the RAF Service Weapons Team.
Actually to be honest the best was firing GPMG with 2.Bit from the door mounting of Wessex HC2 into Paphos bay at dusk and hitting the floating targets. Holiday makers must have wondered what the hell was going on.

blue" shells?
Well the color blue indicates a inert training projectile.
The ones in the photo are for the 25mm Bushmaster chain gun.
Meaning the bullet head itself is a harmless bit of metal. No depleted uranium, no armor pericing, no high explosive, no incendary, ect.
Just a blue painted hunk of metal. It will still make a big hole just not as nasty of a hole.

All the other bits and parts on the gun carrage frame are needed bits to make the gun useable. Controls and motor drives for elevatation, traverse, auto loading mechanical goodies, means to move spent casings away, a place to put your arse, sighting equipment and a cup holder for your mug.
