I have had one with a quantity of original "beutewaffen" Russian guns, founds of PPSH, SWT38-40, Nagant revolvers were not uncommon in the Kesel) and what you mention is due to the buttress bolting system. I do not consider this as temperamental as this was easily previsible and quite limited in amplitude...

Have you any opinion about the G43?

I have ever fired a G43 so no opinion on one.
I like my SVT 40 for what it is, simple, easy to use semi-automatic :)

'Yanks built a hunting rifle, the Germans a target rifle and the Brits a battle rifle...'

Not that I'm very keen on them, but the AK is probably the most widely circulated assault rifle in history, and will fire whether wet or sandy! Though not as accurate as its ar15 counter part, probably will pip everything else, since it is likely to have seen more theatres of op than anything I can think of, bar the smle? - though I'm sure someone will educated me on this...

Personally I think the sten change the way modern firearms were produced, so that's the one for me!

With regard to the AK, I think in some ways you are right, as a reliable battle rifle, it's first rate and it ticks most of the right boxes.

First time I stripped one I was astonished at the lack of moving parts, a truly idiot proof and quite brilliant design!

Very reliable in operation, clever design factors like the bolt cycling back 50% further than it needs to, helps prevent most jams.

It may not be very accurate over 100+yds...but does it need to be, considering your average conscript/ freedom fighter/terrorist can't shoot anyway!

I still give the vote to L1A1, if we are talking post war era though! :cheers:

Couldn't agree more mate, even the troubled L85 has become a dependable weapon in it's A2 incarnation...not world beating perhaps...but as good as anything else out there with regard to reliability and accuracy

I have to disagree if the question was what was the worst service rifle the SA/80 would be top of the list.

Must admit that despite being terribly patriotic-my used and abused K98 outshines my almost pristine No4 accuracy wise.Maybe not as comfortable to handle and nows looks like a well oiled shiny fence post,but it is a delight to shoot regardless.

They all have issues

SA80 first ones poor F*** they we S*** A2 ok but lack of range and power + no left handers.
SLR very good, let down by fitted sight, has good rate of fire range and power, needs a good clean now and again
AK Very good, let down by accuracy at longer ranges, rounds not as effective as 7.62 nato on harder targets & vehicles, not fussy with cleaning
No4/Smle very good only draw back is rate of fire at shorter ranges it can be dominated by semis at close range. At long range best of the lot
M4 ok, lack of range and power, ok for lefties, needs proper cleaning due to gas system with no piston.
FMAS ammo fussy + wrong twist rate, location of charging handle for stoppages.

HK416 no experiance of this but it is replacing M4 with us marines & possibly FAMAS with the french also available in 7.62 HK 417 so could be new leader of the pack as an all rounder
