she can shoulder the gun ok , she just seems to get tired after a while ...
I tend to let her shoot for a bit , then take a break for a while then have another go ...

Needless to say I have had a few encounters with the RCO at the time because frankly the army drilled that into me so it is hard to learn otherwise.

Stop! = Stop firing, apply safety catch lay the weapon down,,,,and do nothing else, until instructed to do so..

Old club used to say step away from the rifle on the grounds that a rifle is just an inert object until someone touches it, but then some of RCO's said no, at stop stop stop you take your finger off the trigger and continue to hold the rifle keeping it pointing down range until cleared by the RCO. The problem as I see it was differing instructions from different RCO's so you never knew what was expected from day to day and they seemed to skip this part in the safety briefings.

I would be interested to hear the opinions of any RCO's on the forum and I am looking forward to next months course.

If I didn't have a "new" rifle to shoot today I would have stayed in bed! It was cold, windy and very wet and Barry Buddon right on the Tay Estuary so a little exposed. We were only on the 100yd Zeroing Range so a good test for the No5 with it's unknown scope/zero!

Well, it was off zero but as I was using 50yr old ball ammo I wasn't going to start messing about for the sake of 82 rounds. eventually had to aim off target to hit it! Cheap/old scope fogged up so that is getting ditched and I will return to iron sights which will allow me to enter the Wapinschaw competition at Aberdeen Full Bore Gun Club in July http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/bestwicks/clubnews.htm which is one of the oldest comps in the UK.

I'd post a couple of pics but file size is too big

Does anybody else find it theraputic cleaning a soaked gun?
It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end!

When I ran a range, if there was a problem, then any firer can shout Stop, Stop, Stop, as well as me (as the RCO) or any other firing point safety supervisor,,,FOR ME the drill would be/is Stop firing, apply safety catch and lay the weapon down,, you the firer would not move, unless told too, you stay behind your weapon thus still having control over it,,what you dont need is people standing up and wandering around on the firing point, scratching their ar$e$ and generally having a chit chat,,,,smoking on or near the firing point or near ammunition points is also an absolute NO NO,,

i know some RCO's are happy to allow firers to keep hold of the weapon,,,,but this in my mind could succombe to the natural instincts of the human being,, which is to start fiddling with things,,,,,when that happens (and it will) this is when we have accidents and Negligent Discharges,,,and that is when people can and do get hurt,,if not by a bullet,, then by my boot up thier ar$e!!

And by the way there is no such animal in my Book as An Accidental Discharge,,,,,it is a Negligent Discharge,,,,why??? because all accidents have an absolute element of Negligence.

Perhaps I should hire out my services as an RCO,??? £40.00 an hour??? strewth I'm in the wrong job??? I'd do it for £10.00 an hour plus a few quid for fuel thrown in!!!

Ha the Travelling RCO!!

With my SA-B-90 Qualification,,,I can run any range for any unit anywhere in the world,,,I can get it converted and recognised by the NRA aswell I know that it can be done,,as I have looked into it before....Hmmm food for thought????

Certainly worth considering isn’t it? We had the last two long range days of the year cancelled due to lack of RCO's luckily a few of us are doing it next month.
