What a bummer - reminds me of when I very carefully marked out a kitchen worktop to fit round a pillar - Ho Hum!

What is your milling machine Dave?

I even wrote the degrees down on a piece of paper as I was starting at 15 in 30 degree steps and still managed to make a mistake. No matter I know if works in theory and this is a learning curve as much as a manufacturing excercise.

The mill is a Chester 20V that I picked up during a spur of the moment visit to the Midland Model engineering exhibition. I went with a view to looking at a Warco mill however the Chester came out on tops for a variety of reasons. I ordered an imperial version they sent me a metric version so they very kindly gave me a set of DRO's which I find invaluable.

Up until 6 weeks ago the closest I had got to a milling machine was walking past them in the tool room so I am learning on the fly. So far it has ticked all the boxes and is proving to be a robust little thing. We do talk about moving from time to time and if we did go I would look for a place with a 3 phase supply and look for an college Mill and lathe.

Aye, you're second attempt will be fine though. It's looking good - possibly the most robust and over engineered one i've seen, but good.

It is an indulgence, I have a few spare days so I may as well build it as I would like it. The important thing is not to keep too much of an eye on the hours spent.....

Well that is the second attempt slotted to 8mm, I just need to finish it with 10mm slots and that is another part done. I also cut the bottom plate to size today so quite productive all in all.

I wish the motor/gearbox units would turn up but I can always make the feet whilst I am waiting....

btw: try to avoid little bits of ali on your shingles...

A picture is worth a thousand words... The plate on top is the replacement drive wheel after messing the last one up, it does not take that long to machine but did take a few days for the blank to be delivered. Today I will machine the legs and fit them. I have a couple of DiY missions around the house but they can wait until the weekend....
