Go with the M4. It still has fine accuracy and good distance. Just lighter and more compact.

Now if we're talking 'zombies', that's different.....It'd be an M16, and a .44 mag revolver for back up :good:

eager, good kit choice. I prefer outside pants, under jacket strong side, no cross draw and efdo no cheeks of bum carry. I would go TWO spare mags minimum..sods law etc. especially if it gets real bad and you faff up a mag chnage or just lose one. As for gun, HK.45 USP full size, round chambered, hammer down safety off...its for personal defence not target shooting.

dougan, your hypothetical situation is not an unusual question but remember that AVOIDANCE is the watchword, if you feel uneasy cross the road, go into a shop or about turn..do something that takes you away from the perceived threat.

If they copy or otherwise follow your moves etc or clealry show intent then go to condition red - the fight is probably on mate! Attacks are never randon, despite what is spouted in the media...each victim is chosen. NOT looking like a victim goes a long way to keeping you safe, as does situational awareness and attitude etc

The situation mentioned about the masses having guns is a red herring / old chestnut that is just not valid anywhere in the world and defoo NOT in the UK, if that were the case our clubs would be awash with mebers and we as gun ownersd would have substantial clout. I reckon more people choose NOT to protect themselves than do, it is the risk factor that is the deterrent to perps.

not sure about tying up someone I have just shot..I doubt they would need tying up..anyway....wehy get close to a threat, apparently resolved or not..That is for the cops and ambulance guys to do, your work is done the minute perp is down and threat ceased...don't forget to self check and look for any of his buddies..and approaching cops.

having just recently become a father, yes stronger feeling for this than I used to have

as for kit, inside waistband holster in the small of my back, and either a SIG 239 or 226 having trained with both of these in switzerland to some degree

When I was in the US I carried:

Kahr PM9
Kel-Tec PF9
Kel-Tec P3AT
Glock 26
Kimber CDP

The Glock was the first gun I ever bought, on the day I landed, and I walked out of the store carrying it IWB! I soon found it to be too thick so I bought the PF9 but I kept the Glock in my truck with a 30 round mag. The P3AT was my backup and rode on an ankle holster, or in a pocket as my primary if I was just taking the garbage out or something like that. The PF9 got replaced with the Kahr because I wasn't happy with the quality of the Kel-Tec - it worked but felt cheap. Lastly I got the Kimber to try something different - much heavier than the other guns I had been carrying but much nicer to shoot and better quality too.

I usually carried an ASP baton OWB under my jacket and pepper spray in a pocket but sometimes I didn't bother, especially with the baton. Always carried these if I was going anywhere in town at night though. At first I carried a spare mag in a pocket, later I got OWB mag pouches for the Kimber and Kahr. I carried (and continue to carry) a bunch of different knives which make a last resort backup clipped to my trouser pocket. Hiking in bear country I took my shotgun with slugs.

Right now the Ruger LC9 looks like a tempting alternative to the Kahr but I'd have to try one.

Lessons learned:
  • The first gun you carry probably won't be the one you stick with
  • The first holster you use definitely won't be the one you stick with
  • Holster choice is just as important as gun choice
  • Having a little pocket gun is important - you are never going to strap something larger on every single time you leave the house no matter what
  • The moment you stick a full size handgun down your trousers any "Of course I can carry a full size gun concealed and stay comfortable," ideas go right out the window - at least for me! May depend on body shape etc

I agree totally on these points - While I generally follow the 'rules' you mention, I have had to 'talk' my way out of 2 mugging attempts in the UK, and ran from one in Honduras (on this occation I would have prefered to be armed as I totally crapped myself...and it was a situation I could have avoided if I'd been more aware...)

The thing about 'avoidance' though, is that if I felt I needed a gun to go somewhere - then I probably wouldn't go there. And I feel that carrying a gun could make some people braver than they can handle...leading to them getting into situations they may not have otherwhise...

About the picture with the kids - this is my other worry - If the law suddenly changed in the UK, then a lot of people not used to guns could end up with one...which could lead to accidents in the home...how many Americans (including kids) have been injured or killed in 'accidents'....?

I'm off out now til tomorrow night, but will pick this back up then - it's an interesting discussion that I've often considered.

If you were to carry a weapon...remember, it can be used against you.

If you draw the weapon...you have already decided to use it.

No John, if the law reverted back to pre-1953 and the restrictive legislation on the 1689 Bill of Rights was removed and the judiciary upheld our rights.........

Firearms related accidents, including those involving children have been falling year to year in the US. Education is the key. And, you will find that even though there may be 70 million gun owners in the US, not all of them are "gun people" and may only have that one gun, for protection.

But, you have to remember that evn in the UK, there are far more good people than bad, and far more people are responsible than there are those who are not.

Yes, I fully support "carry" and I would. I have done before, for a considerable time.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Some people just can't and body shape is a major factor. But just importantly is clothing, belt and holster. IWB for Hi-Power caused me no issues. Proper "gun belt", double thickness, jeans and trousers one size up and a holster worn in exactly the same place if I used an OWB. My boss had untold trouble. A little middle aged spread and a square torso. Resorted to the pocket of his duffle coat in the winter and dropped to a .32 Walther in the summer.
