It measures at around 38/39mm and is stamped APCBC2PR1X amongst other things, my Father used to have it as a paper weight and in later years I used it as a nut cracker, these days it stands in a corner and I am undecided on what to do with it.pe4king wrote:Well its an armour piercing balistic cap shell what is the calibre,? 40mm Bofors :?: :?: :?:

Nope - stumped.Sandgroper wrote:I was thinking a 2pdr, but it's too short and not rimmed.pe4king wrote:Well its an armour piercing balistic cap shell what is the calibre,?ovenpaa wrote:So you should know this one....
40mm Bofors :?: :?: :?:

The closest I could find in size were all rimmed. This is the sort of research I like.

As for your other one, I'm pretty sure it's a 20x102 (US M39 and M61 Vulcan, GIAT 20M621). At least it seems the closest match, unless it's an experimental cartridge?

Re: Brass collecting
Safe as houses and perfectly fine for nut cracking and other impact duties, it will be solid apart from the cap and maybe a tracer pocketovenpaa wrote:So retiring it from nut cracking duties.. Good thing?pe4king wrote:Armour Piercing Cap Balistic Cap 2pdr is approx 37mm could be that or the Bofors

Could be that one it looks very much like it however it is a fairly modern round which im most cases (excuse the pun) would be headstamped, older or wartime production not so much.Sandgroper wrote:

Well done people, I learnt something tonight. I will have a rummage around and see what else is hiding in the shadows. I just had a look around the living room and kitchen, for someone who no longer collects brass I counted 50+ examples.

Re: Brass collecting
I'm an idiot - even after pe4king dropped the hint by saying it was APBC - the penny still didn't drop that I was looking at the projectile only and not the whole round!pe4king wrote:Well its an armour piercing balistic cap shell what is the calibre,?ovenpaa wrote:So you should know this one....
40mm Bofors :?: :?: :?:

The 2 pdr had an APBC round perduced for it. The 40mm Bofors had an AP round for use, whether or not it was ballistic capped I don't know - yet.

Re: Brass collecting
This is turning into an epic now, see ovenpaa you have stirred up an ordnance related hornets nest
We will get to the bottom of this one way or another until at least I can actually find a purpose for my existance today  so between the list of tasks I have been directed to carry out today from Mrs PE4 I shall endeavour to dig through the 25 or so ordnance ref cds the 2 are very similar the devil is in the detail as they say it looks like a 40mm (having dug up approx 20000 of the little mites in the past) but other things could also point to 2pdr which is 37mm.
I should really get myself a life as you can probably guess im not shooting this weekend
