whilst secretary of my rifle club a few years ago I was requested to inform the police if any of the members changed any of their firearms , I was supposed to send a letter telling the membership they had to inform me if they purchased a new firearm , I refused on the grounds that the police already had all this info , they didn't take it well , I was dragged up and down the carpet at police hq , shortly after that I resigned as secretary !

But it's not Extra nonsense, these criteria have been in existence for years. Just being enforced a little more now.
not exactly , you are supposed to list the calibres you use on a range day , fine , been doing that for years , the serial number thing is new and in my opinion not required , the police have that info already

just another way to make shooters lives more difficult with zero improvement to public safety if you ask me

No it's not; "details of firearms as on certificate" (which has always included serial number)

so how does a club stand regarding data protection ?

if the list gets into the wrong hands someone has your details and a list of your guns so how would the police view this 'sharing 'of imformation if they were stolen ?

The club is responsible for complying with the Data Protection Act.

But it's nothing to do with the club how often members use their guns. It's the police's concern. They use the club as impartial intermediearies really. But if i never shoot one particular rifle at one Club it is not their job to inform the police of this
They need to inform the police if they haven't seen you all year but again if you don't show up for 3 months it's not for them to call the police
I'm sure there is a lawful requirement for HO approved clubs to keep records of attendance and firearms used which has to be available at all times for the police to inspect. The only 'new' thing I thought there was, is the providing of greater detail, but apparently that may not even be the case.

EDIT; Yep - Criteria for HO approved clubs;

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... Final_.pdf

F. the club will maintain a register of the attendance of all members together with details for each visit of the firearms which they used (see note 6) ;

Note 6; An attendance register should be kept of all members. In the case of a firearm held on a member’s firearm certificate, the register will record the calibre, type and serial number of the firearm(s) used and the date. All visiting shooters should be logged in the same way. In the case of competition shoots between clubs, the responsibility for recording the attendance of a team member will lie with the club that the shooter represents. In the case of open competitions, the organising club will record details of competitors. Clubs should retain their attendance records for a minimum of 6 years.

yes, not doubting that, part i'm referring to is the club in question monitoring your use and seemingly volunteering info to the police. it is there for the police torequest, and check if they wish.

well if i wanted to ban something I would put progressively more and more regulations and restrictions plus more and more irrelevant record keeping until it was really easy to trip people up and remove whatever it was I wanted to ban , I'd probably use the public purse to do this as well ! I might even offer an incredibly frustrating system of regulation with all sorts of ambiguous laws and enforce it randomly depending where abouts in the country you are ?

that's what I'd do anyway if I decided I didn't like something one of the most law abiding sections of the community did.

and if that section of the community were happy to throw each other to the wolves to protect their individual part of that thing it would make my life so much easier !
