Just for fun a mate phoned Barclays and told them he was going to close his personal and business accounts with Barclays. Asked why, he relayed the above. The business manager had allegedly never heard of these "rule changes"..... He got a decent incentive to "stay", so he reckoned!

We're not sure if this is anything to do with money laundering, oomans. About two years ago we tried to withdraw a sum of money in cash from our bank and were asked to the Manager's office. The Manager asked us why we wanted to withdraw the money, so we told him to mind his own business. Politely of course. He produced a form and asked us to fill it in so that it could be forwarded to HMR&C as it was then, with a copy also to the bank's Head Office and a third unlabelled copy he said was for 'The Security Service'. It wasn't the actual amount we were withdrawing that was the problem, allegedly, but the fact that it was an unusual transaction for us. We don't normally withdraw more than a hundred or two pounds in cash at any time hence it had been flagged up on their systems as 'unusual' and to be reported.

The form was pre-printed with all our details so we took up our pen and filled in the boxes that asked "Reason for withdrawal". We put "Financing international terrorism and / or drugs deals - to be decided" and handed the forms over. The Manager popped them in an envelope and took us back to the cashier who gave us our money.

We've heard nothing more about it...

Badger, it was everything to do with money laundering and prevention of terrorism - two bullsh1t excuses to spy on the general public.

Rules brought in to be used in exceptional cases quickly abused to spy on the poublic - yet Barclays rigged the rates market and got away with it - though some poor suckers may have been scapegoated. How can banks print notes and yet not be done for counterfeiting!

too true - when they change say Easter weekend to "Bank holiday weekend" you know the banks are way too big for their britches...

Just read bulletin 6 from the NRA containing an apologist spiel regarding the intrusive requests from Barclays Bank to shooting clubs which are Barclays customers. The NRA seem to support the requests by Barclays although there is no real explanation for the Barclays requests...why are other banks not making these requests....what do Barclays do with the information and copy documents they obtain...
Barclays have a financial crime list as long as this page...not the sort of firm to give confidential information to.
What has prompted this interest in shooting clubs, from Barclays Bank?

Interestingly the NRA being 'all over it like a rash' doesn't seem to have had much effect so far.

Probably with all the vigour with which they defended pistol shooting and semi-automatic full bore rifles back in the day if the Barkers apologist email from the NRA I received today is anything to go by.
