Custom paint jobs - is there a line?

Ok, take NERF off of the side and how is it any different from some of these practical race pistols in bright and fanciful colours with all sorts of sci-if optic mounts and stuff bolted to it, or a bright coloured shotgun, or a 10/22 in a bright blue 'evolution' stock, or even a Dolphin F-class rifle in bright colours?

And what is all this talk or pointing at a copper? It's someone on a range painting it up in bright colours, not pointing it at coppers. Yes, crims will do whatever they like, shall we stop real guns because they might point a real gun at someone, or ban airsoft guns because someone might point it at someone?

Some of you lot confuse me. Get worked up when someone says black guns make you a walting psychopath, then condemn people as trying to purposefully conceal a firearm so they can walk down a street with it if they paint it in colourful colours like that found on a toy gun.

Paying devils advocate if you had a gun painted to look like a toy over here could an overzealous copper (+CPS) try to pin a Section 5 offence on you under;

Subject to section 5A of this Act, a person commits an offence if, without the authority of the Secretary of State [F8or the Scottish Ministers (by virtue of provision made under section 63 of the Scotland Act 1998], he has in his possession, or purchases or acquires, or sells or transfers—

(a)any firearm which is disguised as another object;

Was just about to point this out. Therefore painting guns in this country to look like toys is already an offence.

How far does a paint job go before it comes under this banner, as yet has not been established, no doubt painting an AR to look like a Nerf gun would see it enacted though, as you so rightly say if you got an overzealous copper on the case.

I agree mate but please stop confusing an over zealous copper with a copper who has a memory TG. Same goes for fluffy and his phone gun comment.

My point is that "AS SOON AS" (by which I mean a precedent is set) someone within the LE or military (or even another perp) gets popped by one of these "Concealed" or "Camouflaged, decoy, call it what you will but it dont look like the real thing" then, as far as common sense sees it, they have yet another firearms related problem.

It will then be the authorities that ask that question, the authorities that deal with "The problem" which usually involves a ban or somesuch, and whatever else they can deal with under the same heading (so watch all the drop in kits for 10-22s go with it).

They reacted to the realistic look of the airsofties toys by making them silly colours or having to be in a softcell to buy "Realistic" ones because "THEY WERE DECEIVING, THEY WERE DIFFICULT TO TELL FROM THE REAL THING"...Got that? Sorry I had to shout but the point needs making.

I grant you that it is unlikely as it stands, but why do we habitually argue and try to kick the tiger in the bo...cks? It will only bite and we wont like it.

Look after the image and clarity of the firearms owners as its not an easy thing to do these days.

It took gross derliction by the police to allow those two inidents to happen.

The SLR's were thrown under the bus by the NRA at the time were they not...seems there was "no sporting need for them " or some such silly statement. At any rate, surely both incidents were the result of abject police failure to act on warnings given followed by a complete failure of the community and its reprentative bodies to defend itself.

At what point then do we just call it a day and let criminals win - because that is what we are doing....modifying our behavious to accommodate criminals.

As long as we pander to the "what if" scenarios we'll go nowhere fast. Criminals are already disguising real guns as toys so the concept of "we shouldn't do it in case we give criminals ideas" is really unfounded is it not.

In regards to painted / coated guns, here is a perfect example of one that could cause a real problem:

If an American were to carry this for the purpose of self-defence and actually shot someone, they may find it hard to convince a court that they were not a "trigger-happy" gun-nut, just itching to blast someone away!
