Well in this country you can only fire one at a time and if you can be trusted with 1, 10, 25, 100 or 200 you can be trusted with 1000.

Supplementary Mr. Speaker? What's a "hold limit" and how/why is it different from a "purchase limit" ? Thanks. :)

It WAS the case until last year, that the gun licence for rifles (FAC) listed the allowance of ammunition by caliber - with the qty. allowed on.

The qty. was broken down:
1. the TOTAL you could posses
2. The MAXIMUM you could buy at any one time.

The current situation now is that you only have the TOTAL to posses listed on the FAC

That makes more sense provided you keep an accurate record of what you have.

I had my ammunition holding reduced at my last renewal because the FEO pointed out that I couldn't fit all my allowance in my ammunition safe (I store several bolts in there as well). I didn't bother me too much as I reload most of my rounds anyway, but now I have new safes and more room I shall ask for an increase on next renewal.

In West Mercia area there is no longer a seperate purchase/hold figures, just a maximum hold allowance.

We will be the same after our renewals later this year... all being well fingerscrossed but you never know....

Interesting. From the comments here, it doesn't seem to me that these 'allowances' really hamper folks' ability to shoot pretty much as they want. Not what I would have expected, I think. I suppose I thought that the idea of an ammo allowance would be to make only very small amounts of rounds available to each person. But, the amounts I see here are about what I usually have on hand at any given point (subject to the vagueries of retail supply from time-to-time) . For instance, right at the moment, I have around 3000 22LR, about 300 .22WMR, maybe 150 .223, around 100 .308 and perhaps 200 shotgun shells, both 20 and 12, which it seems is mostly within the allowance figures quoted in some of the posts here.

I guess I thought the UK 'regime' was somewhat more draconian than it actually seems to be. Obviously, I was mistaken. :)

I met someone who's FAC allowed purchase of 50 rounds of .22lr & holding 100 rounds of .22lr...and he was almost prosecuted for having 5 rounds over the limit on an inspection....

So, am I wrong in thinking that the numbers I have seen in this Thread are typical? Are quite small numbers, like your example, more the norm??

I don't think very small numbers are the norm, I'd suggest 250 to purchase in any calibre was about right with say an extra 50 or 100 max to possess.
