I am astounded! When I get home I'll dig out my video capture kit and preserve that snippet - it's very telling that someone who claims to be campaigning against (insert -ism du jour here) makes an overt racial reference.

I know it is astounding!

In a section of his lecture where he makes unsubstantiated accusations against the shooting press of casual racism in their writing he makes a casual racist joke!

I know if I made a joke like that in a professional setting I would be up in front of a disciplinary panel for bringing my employer into disrepute yet he bold as brass in a University of Brighton lecture hall does it and he is still in the same role....

Now try and sit through this interview from 2009, scroll though to 1:50 and consider:

a) No they are not banned Peter, they are just restricted to those who are members of re-enactment societies or a UKARA registered airsoft site
b) Which then leads me to the question, that replica pistol you are holding there Peter. Are YOU a member of a re-enactment society or a UKARA registered airsoft site?

Another screen cap for you there Gaz.

Well I would be interested to see if Peter Squires is a registered reenactor or member of a UKARA registered Airsoft site.

If not why has he got a restricted item in his office.

Peter Squires being hauled in-front of a Judge for a gun related offence would make my day.

Perhaps we could ask the university for clarification given;

Perhaps he has had the opportunity to make a real-life comparison and we're judging too harshly? I'm sure the current Korean students or alumni could offer their opinion...

Fedaykin wrote:One of the strangest moments in the entire talk Gaz!

First go to 32:20 where he starts a rather long winded story about a letter he wrote to the editor of the "Scottish Field", earlier in the talk he stated that he sent a letter to the editor of the Scottish field where he called members of the shooting fraternity "W***". The story he starts to convey now is about an article he read in shooting times, apparently in the article a novice had shot two birds and held them up to show the shoot manager. At 34:00 minutes in Peter then goes for his punch line by stating:
the novice(sic)...was grinning like a masturbating Korean
To be followed by a few confused laughs from the audience.

In the whole section of the talk he had been making a rather tortured point that all people who participate in country shooting sports are a group of casually cruel, sexist and racist toffs. He had been inferring but never outright stating that the general writing of country shooting magazines are racist and sexist. It was offensive and also presented with no corroborating evidence. It rather smelt like Social Justice Warrior, third wave feminist gripes about something they call "Micro aggressions". In that if you make any joke however tongue in cheek or silly that refers to one gender or the other "but particularly woman" it is a micro aggression and a sign of oppression by the patriarchy. To be honest whilst I am not a big reader of Shooting times I don't particularly see overt sexist and racist comments forming a large part of their articles. Actually what he stated was rather defamatory of said publication. Certainly if any shooting magazine let racist comments into their articles they might well be violating the "Race relations act 2000".

Maybe worth a call to the editor of "Scottish Field" Gaz, it would be interesting to see what his communications were like.
Is that quote Racist? if so should it be reported to the Police?

Yes, no question of that. Also highly hypocritical considering only a few seconds earlier he was accusing the shooting press of casual racism. It was certainly tasteless and not becoming of an academic who was presenting his opinion at his place of employment. There was no need to reference any nationality when he made his "Joke" so it certainly falls under the banner of casual racism.

As for reporting to the police, probably a bit late now but worth holding onto for future reference. I think it would be a tough prosecution but something well worth wheeling out if he sits on any future panels.

Is anyone going to report it?

I wonder how the Korean embassy or Brighton Uni would respond to this comment?

I would suggest he's brought the university in to disrepute.

Someone needs to keep a copy of this `presentation` before it's removed forever...
