So now you know better and if the same thing should ever happen again in future I'm sure that you will do all three if necessary.
The number of forces that have tried it on in the past by simply saying "it's not our policy to issue temporary certificates, you'll be alright" is unbelievable. Thankfully most shooters and the shooting associations have cottoned on to it and are prepared to challenge them on it.

Exactly! The only time i don't have my certificates with me when i've got guns is during renewals and variations (And i always try to keep my certificates until the variation is approved and just hand over the old cert when i pick up the new one at the police HQ)

WHY don't you have it? You keep your certificate until the new one arrives you DO NOT NEED TO SEND IT BACK.

Not according to Durham! Include your ticket or the renewal application will be returned to you!

I've noticed that the new variation forms have in big letters on the front page of F202 "note: the Certificate to be varied must be enclosed with this form". Yet I've been allowed to keep hold of my certificate, but F201 for renewal doesn't have such a warning/claim on, i wonder if they've had a change of heart/wind direction/been 'advised' by a shooting association?

I know that BASC for one advise holding on to your certificate until the renewed ticket is issued and I believe that ACPO have accepted this also and advised similarly.
My own force normally accepts this as the norm but just and to be sure I always comment in my covering letter or email that I will be retaining the existing certificate unless they contact me and inform me otherwise.

In that case report them to BASC who will take it up as they want to know about forces that make their own rules.

Form 201A states:
4. Unless otherwise advised by the police, you should post or take the completed form together with the fee and photographs to the police firearms licensing department. In the case of an application for renewal of a shotgun certificate, the current certificate or a signed and dated recent copy should be included with the application.

Only the SGC is referred to and then a copy is acceptable.

Have just called my FET and they confirmed that just a copy of the SGC is needed in accordance with te new forms and procedure. Definitely, as I said before, a case for informing BASC.

And after spending yesterday slating Durham I came home to find my newly vaired FAC waiting for me with a spare lower receiver for my BR99, 7.62x39 rifle, sound mod and 600rds. Put the variation in last Friday afternoon so they won't have seen it til Monday and it was post marked 7/4/14 so it took all of ONE DAY, the cheque hasn't even been cashed yet! Don't I feel like a dick...

They might have a fast turn around but they still appear to invent their own rules!

I hope Glos are similar- When my FEO visited last week to pickup variation for 7.62x39 rifle/.303 rifle/S1 shotgun she mentioned I should wait two weeks and then email her and she'd chase it. That'd be a turnaround from 2 years back when they took nine months to grant FAC.

As it is, I suspect we'll have to chase it a couple of times and then they'll throw a hissy re shotgun/ammunition allowances/spare MLR cylinder slot that's already on there....

But I can hope tesnews
