The petition says this:

... so the end state is that the 97 No.1 Act comes into full force, less sections 12(1)(c) and 13.

Section 1 of that Act, which would therefore remain in force as I understand the petition, says this:

1 Extension of s.5 of the 1968 Act to prohibit certain small firearms etc.

(1)Section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968 (referred to in this Act as “the 1968 Act”) shall have effect with the following amendments.

(2)In subsection (1) (which describes weapons which are prohibited by section 5), after paragraph (ab) there shall be inserted the following paragraph—

“(aba)any firearm which either has a barrel less than 30 centimetres in length or is less than 60 centimetres in length overall, other than an air weapon, a small-calibre pistol, a muzzle-loading gun or a firearm designed as signalling apparatus;”.

Perhaps I'm wrong again. Perhaps I've misread something and got confused. Would someone (Sandgroper?) be kind enough to read the law and the petition again and form a second opinion?

Paragraph (aba) confirms that air weapons, a small-calibre pistols, a muzzle-loading guns or firearms designed as signalling apparatus would be the only firearms allowed to be smaller than 30cm/60cm, AKA the 12/24 rule.

4000 signatures in just over 72hrs. That's a pretty amazing response, hopefully the momentum will continue?

The two non-shooting GP's that I took to the Shooting Show just let me know they've signed it and hopefully they'll tell some more non-shooters too.

Does anyone know if the other National Bodies are supporting this? Pretty clear the difference that the BASC support is having.

BASC urges all members to sign and share a petition calling on the Government to amend the Firearms Acts to allow the ownership and use of .22 calibre rimfire pistols for competitive sporting purposes in England, Wales and Scotland.

This campaign is led by Firearms UK and its petition is hosted on the Government’s e-petition website. If the petition passes 10,000 signatures the Home Office must provide a response. If it exceeds 100,000 signatures it becomes eligible for formal debate in Parliament.

Prior to the pistol ban in 1997 competitors could legally purchase, own and use .22 calibre pistols for target shooting competitions at approved clubs to Olympic level.

The petition asks that the sport of target pistol shooting be once more permitted under the existing licensing scheme, allowing a much-loved sporting discipline to flourish again.

A special dispensation has been arranged for our Commonwealth and Olympic pistol shooting teams to train in the UK and participate in the 2014 Commonwealth games in Glasgow. But this offers no avenue for new people coming into the sport. It also places serious limitations on our ability to compete at a high level in the future.

Target shooting is an all-inclusive sport, with less-able-bodied, deaf and visually-impaired people competing with the able-bodied on an equal basis at all levels and within all disciplines.

Shooting is a major international competitive sport in which the UK has a long history of success. It is time that legislation encouraged British athletes to participate on a level field with other international teams.

Even if you have no personal interest in .22 pistol shooting, by signing the petition you can show your support for shooting in general and contribute to an act of solidarity which will set the scene for future challenges.

Do you folks think it would be a bad or good idea to have folks here in the US sign this petition as well? I'm also a member of a few US based shooting forums and I don't mind putting the word out there if you guys think it would help. It does allow US address as I put mine in and it worked.

Numbers wise it wouldn't do any harm, however it could be used by the Govt to ignore the result - as the Scottish Govt did in the last Airgun consultation. They claimed that the large number of replies from outside of Scotland meant that the results weren't valid.

According to the terms & conditions of the Gov. Direct epetition site you have to be a British Citizen OR Resident in the UK. You don't have to be both.

I say spread the word but be clear Brit expats only.

Yeah you are quite right, I'll leave it. BTW even though I have American citizenship I'm still a UK tax paying British citizen as well so I signed it.
