C&G supplied rifles usually have a new UK BNP proof stamp, usually underside of the muzzle.

He informed me that the 7.62 from that era did not create such high pressures as the modern ammunition. Apparently this became a problem a few years back when older actions were failing with new ammunition.
He questioned where and when these rifles were proofed. If they were proofed in the UK recently, he suspected that there would be no problem, however if they were proofed in the post war years, then he would not wish to have one as a club gun, mainly as it would be too much of a responsibility to keep an eye on what was getting put down the barrel.

As you sure he wasn't confusing 308WIN with 7.62NATO?

The worst case scenario for shooters of 7.62 NATO rifles is as follows: Using a commercially made, maximum pressure cartridge with long headspace, fired from a weak action (ex. converted 93/95 Mausers).

The weaker action is a possible final piece of the 308 vs 7.62 NATO puzzle.

Perhaps no single element will cause your rifle to fail. Maybe you've used your rifle for a while with no ill effects. Usually a rifle will take some abuse before failing. Like a lot of things in life, Murphy's Law - If something can go wrong, it will - could very well catch up with you.

DM, I have the full chamber drawing and dimensions for .308 commercial and 7.62x51 so you can see the exact dimensional differences. I will mail them over. If anyone else wants a copy just shout

The Mauser action is very robust and as long as you are sensible about what you put through it you should be fine, there are a few 7,62x51 milsurp's I would avoid right now with top of the list being AMA.

Nicest at the moment (and cheapest) is the South African stuff in the 140 round battle packs if you can find it, I picked some up end of last year and wish I had got more at the time.

Yes because whatever cartridge you put in the chamber be it 7,62x51 or .308 is going to end up with those dimensions :)

After testing I'm going to be using .308 Winchester ammo in my Mauser, when used up I will reload the brass...... Hope this is of help.

So you are starting off with factory ammunition? What weight bullet is it?

Yes but only to test, only bought a small amount of 145gr & 168gr PPU. My other .308 I reload for I use Sierra matchkings in 168gr anyway so the mauser will be reloaded the same, but using different brass. I did put 5 of my reloads through without any noticeable difference, to the factory 168gr but only on zero range so no distance.
