I thought the one's guncity sold had 5 rounds in? Are you sure they are 7 rounders? Also I know moderators aren't even regulated there and do you have subsonic ammo to work with for the goats?DaveB wrote:Yes, very popular here in NZ. I bought my Chinese copy a few years ago for NZ$380 - still in the cosmoline. Many of them have the bayonet removed (and the attachment ground off) and the magazine reworked to only hold 7 rounds, then you can own it on a A-Category licence.Sixshot6 wrote:They are very cheap in Canada (some are under 200 Canadian Loonies), coupled with a magwell adapter to take advantage of a ruling of the the use of "pistol mags" and you can have a nice fun to shoot and cheap to run rifle there, they are also popular in New Zealand and American's can't get enough of them (though russian one's never come there now and other supplies are running dry since chinese stuff was also stopped in 1993).DW58 wrote:Presumably it's got a new barrel as part of the neutering process. The SKS is a great everyman's rifle at the end of the day.

Depends who does the conversion. The legal maximum for a semi-auto in A-Cat is 7 rounds. Some conversions hit that goal, others go for 5. Seven rounds is an odd limit, and I imagine buying parts off the shelf for a conversion, that 5 round magazines are more easily available.
Yes subsonic ammo is available here in NZ for suppressor-equipped rifles. A lot of .22RF sub-sonic is sold here. I have to admit I have only seen one or two suppressor-equipped SKS rifles. The Norinco M305s are sometimes offered with a suppressor. When it comes to the full-bore calibres, you don't see a lot of factory sub-sonic ammunition for sale. Most people will load their own. Many people just shoot supersonic ammo thru their suppressors. It doesn't help the supersonic crack of the round, but it does obviate (to some degree) the need for hearing protection. Goats are sometimes shot at some significant distances, and it may be that subsonic ammunition has a range penalty which is not suitable for some shots. I just bought an ASE quick-detach suppressor for the AR15 in 300 Blackout - I intend to shoot both sub- and super-sonic through it.

Well good luck and hope you get some good shooting in, almost makes me wish I lived there, I'm still young and maybe one I'll go there.

Pretty easy. You can get £35 adapters that put the eye along the rib, I got a more expensive "high tube" adapter to go with the 24" rail and barrel clamp.Blackstuff wrote:How much work was it to get it to take AR stocks? Presumably you'll now have to use it with a raised optic as you won't be able to get your head down along the rib?safetyfirst wrote:OMG. MY EYES MIIIIYYYYY EEEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYIS
So i built this out of an express magnum, a wingmaster and a selection of tactical nonsense.
Quite a transformation.
I was going for "space marine"
Recoil is the thing that catches you out. A lightweight shotgun with an AR stock is brutal. Mesa tactical make recoil reduction stock tubes and Limbsaver make magpul stock compatible recoil pads.
This beast is nice and chunky and has a Limbsaver on it.

I have had this SMLE awhile and I am looking to see if anyonehere can throw a bit of light on it. I have done some digging for info but I have not got very far. It came with a story that I can't prove ie It was accurised by H Burton Wilson, who worked at Bisley between 1907 and 1922..this is confirmed by the NRA Museum. It is supposed to be 1916 dated but I can't find a date on the rifle but I am sure the wood is of the style used from 1915..ie the foresight windage dial is not fitted but the wood is shaped to take it. The unproven story that came with it says that it was gifted to the 10th Viscount Downe of Wykeham Abbey in 1930 and that it stayed in the armoury there until a few years ago. It has also been suggested that it was used as a sniper rifle in the 1st World War..again unproven. I am told the sights date from somewhere between 1909 to 1911. The Wykeham Abbey Estate showed some interest when I first contacted them, but now are not replying to emails.
Whatever the truth, it's a lovely rifle to shoot and is far more accurate than I am. I love it
