What I suggest is, all has been said that can be said about the L85 SA80 EM-2 (wouldn't mind talking about the EM-1 a bit more).
In the end there are the book brigade of which I am a member, I have shot a fair amount but nothing like many forum members. I know John MH upset some people but he is an experienced shooter with a reputation for knowledge based upon practical experience. That shouldn't be treated lightly, no doubt on the range he is exactly the person I would turn to for advice due to superior long term shooting knowledge. On the other hand that doesn't mean I or anybody can't discuss or share knowledge based upon research. I treat gun research the same way one would treat researching the history of the Great Western Railway. I don't presume all knowledge, I have changed my position many a time based upon better informed people setting me straight. I am a mere nipper at the age of 35 with much to learn and I enjoy the sport.
So everybody chill out, SA80 threads always turn into handbags at dawn
Funny how I pointed out to you DW58 that this thread was surprisingly polite, amazing what a few hours will do.

For the record, I'd trust my life to the L85A2 over anything else.

Thank you, a very positive comment mate. I only hope that a replacement is executed right and with clear heads. You are the kind of person I had in mind for a contribution.

You have summed up the whole SA80 issue perfectly SevenSixTwo, beyond all the technical and ergonomic debates British troops are happy to trust their lives with the rifle. It is serving well and the serious well reported and commented on trust issues of the 90's are long gone.
As i said earlier I have a hunch there will be a fair few troops who will wistfully talk about their L85 once it is retired in much the same vein as various old sorts have called for the SLR to come back over the years.

It would appear that these rifles have performed well in international competitions.
