Didn't say I turned a blind eye did I?

They weren't too bad when I was there (although I was only there for a couple of years - early 1980s) - the bad stuff all happened after I had left. At that point you were allowed to carry firearms around (I remember carrying my rifle in a soft case on the Underground many times) although I found it odd when one of them had three pistols strapped on to various parts of his anatomy when sitting in McDonalds on Oxford Street!

I did discuss the other person I mentioned with the relevant police force - their attitude was "can't do anything until he does something wrong". Luckily this is no longer an issue.

Believe me if I have concerns about a person concerning firearms then I would report them to the relevant authorities and I have done on two occasions in the past.

When I first started shooting I was at college with two guys who were members of the rifle club - one of whom claimed he was in the SAS and walked around with three pistols secreted about his person at all times.

If anyone behaved like that at any club I know here he wouldn't be in the club. The police would be informed and he would not have his firearms for very long. Maybe things in England were different in the past.

Yep - I was 20 and they were running the club. He told us he had a permit to carry them so why would a young student not believe him? He knew more about firearms than me and I was a very shy, naive student.

It wouldn't happen now but I'm not a 20 year old student now and as I said the really bad stuff happened after I had left (although I still had friends in the rifle club). The rifle club folded soon afterwards.

Wonder what happened to the pair of them? Might do a quick Google on them as one had a fairly rare name . . .

How does one get onto the General Council of the UK NRA? Are they voted on to the council by the NRA members?

Thank you for the reply Karen, well guys if you don't like what nfrancis thinks shooting is then you know what to do come the next election. Or if there is a recall system in place then use it.

Karen, you said earlier that weren't we all a little competitive even when we are out just plinking/shooting by ourselves. Speaking for myself only I'd say no, not at all. For me it's about just getting out there in the fresh air and doing what I enjoy doing most. I regularly take rifles out that I know consistently shoot well just for the sake of giving them an airing. I take out rifles that I know don't shoot so well with certain loads to try and find out why they won't shoot well.

I've done competitive shooting in the past and had great fun doing it. These days it's just about doing it for the pure enjoyment of being out there doing it. I love nothing better than just sitting back while waiting for a rifle barrel to cool and watch and listening to what's going on around me. Nothing competitive at all in my shooting these days. I do it because it makes me happy.

NRA Gallery Rifle Discipline Representative

NRA Discipline Representatives serve a three year term on NRA General Council. The Gallery Rifle Discipline Representative position is up for election in 2014 to serve a term from September 2014 to September 2017. This is our discipline and at present Neil Francis is the incumbent representative. Neil has indicated he is prepared to serve another term but this, of course, depends on whether the community is willing to continue to support this.

Forms are available below for nomination of any eligible person to this role however only persons who are registered members of the National Rifle Association and who have fully paid up their NRA subscriptions for 31 March are eligible to be candidates for election to the General Council and to be Proposers for such candidates.

Those voting for the Gallery Rifle Shooting Discipline Candidates must have previously declared that Shooting Discipline to the NRA as their primary Shooting Discipline. Eligibility for voting will be determined as at 30 April 2014.
The programme of key dates for Elections:

31 March 2014 - All Candidates and Proposers must be fully paid-up Registered Members of the Association by this date.

30 April 2014 - Nominations for all vacancies must be returned to the Chief Executive by 17:00 on this date. Registered Members must be qualified for voting for their respective Regional or Shooting Discipline Candidate by this date. All Members desiring to vote must be fully paid-up Registered Members by this date.

23 May 2014 - Voting slips will be posted out to all entitled Members by this date together with the procedures for voting.

14 July 2014 - Voting slips in the correct envelope supplied must be received by the NRA office by mail or by hand, no later than 5.00pm on this date.

Scrutineers appointed by the Council to be notified after the Council Meeting on 25 April 2014.

Dromia, thanks for the explanation mate, it's much the same for the US NRA with the exception of "Scrutineers appointed by the Council to be notified after the Council Meeting on 25 April 2014."

In the interests of impartiality the US NRA GC doesn't get to pick/appoint who the Scrutineers will be.

Nor do NRA UK GC - the scrutineers are selected by the Trustees (aka Council). The name similarity is confusing!

We usually use the same people each year (I can think of four people who have been involved in the past 10 years or so and they select two of them). They are not on GC or have any positions of power - they are totally trustworthy and independent.
