Putting on my media hat:
  • No bullet hole or mark on the property. On a white painted wall I'd expect the impact mark to show up pretty clearly, and I'd have expected both a) the journos to ask if the impact mark could be seen, and b) the landlady to show them to add credence to her story.
  • Bullet-marked range sign - really?! Bloody slack drills by the club for allowing members to pop off at the sign, never mind leaving it pockmarked. Massively bad impression for prospective members and people watching that video alike.
  • Very convenient for the journalists - this sort of "dangerous guns" and "local conflict" stories get local news hacks drooling. I suspect the landlady wants the rifle club gone for noise reasons.
  • Bullet hits solid wall and bounces off, fine. But are you seriously telling me that a mangled bullet can be recognised as a certain calibre just by looking at it? No ballistic forensic analysis involved? Too convenient.
  • Poor journalism by not getting the club to comment. Unless, of course, somebody told the club that "no comment" was a good idea...
  • The "thwack, thump" sound the landlady describes does sound authentic. I find it difficult to believe a range shooter could put one over the top, though.

Does anyone know what really happened and what happened next?

My new (to me) Devon and Cornwall FEO was sceptical about it being a round from a cartridge gun. More likely an air gun or BB.

He obviously knew the case and wouldn't discuss it at length, quite rightly, as it was still being investigated.

When I offered my take on it, that it was possibly a route being taken by an anti-gun/shooter to promote the cause, he just smiled and asked me where I was going to put the cabinet. :run:
