After an afternoon or reading reviews, the two tacticool rifles that appeal are the Sig 522 and the Smith & Wesson M&P15/22. I'll put them on the shortlist alongside the PSS 50, the Browning take down and the AR7 survival rifle. Any owners of these rifles out there able to vouch for how reliable / accurate they are ?

Next task of course will be persuading Mr Plod that I do actually need more than one .22 rifle on my ticket.

Accuracy and reliability are not two words you associate with the AR7. pe4king had one recently and I had excusions with one 10 years ago. Stay away would be my advice....

I wouldnt even consider another AR7 even if it was free (now that says a lot) I bought mine on a dodgy whim and unloaded it within a couple of months, I now have an ISSC Mk22 (FN SCAR lookalike) which is for the use of my boy he loves it and to be honest its not bad after a basic lesson in cleaning after very cheap dirty ammunition it now runs on minimag with no probs, I also have a V22 upper for my AR which is also good fun, and makes me smile every time I empty a 20rd mag in 10 secs

I got the HK416 .22lr and its a nice rifle, feels good, cycles flawlessly - trigger is heavy and been considering trying to get it apart to polish the trigger (It'd be a first for me - but I don't really want to fall foul and make it full auto in the process - easily done so I've read).

The major drawback with it, and every other clone I've seen other than the purpose built offerings from bradley arms, spikes, lantac and southern gun, is that it just doesnt perform accuracy wise.

groupings of about a £2 coin size at 25 yards, which isnt too bad, but its no competetive gun.

However aside from its military looks, the major draw to a rifle like this, is the fun factor, and it comes with buckets of it.

If I did it again, I probably would have gone for something more accurate, but I'd lose out on the fun factor... swings and roundabouts :(

The S&W MP15-22 is great great fun. Couple of French AR friends have bought them and they are great AR clones and work perfectly
Umarex HK 416 looks great but does come at a px . For an extraGBP 80 you can get a CMMG. It is a real lower with a 22 upper.
I still own my 1st rifle, an ERMA M1. It has eaten a truly huge ammount of ammo absolutly flawlessly. It is a bit old skool but it can be had cheap second hand and packs a good fun factor

Great little guns,had one but had to sell it on get a 10/22.If i had the cash i'd get another,ITL shooting usually have a few and spares as well.

Have you seen this new offering from GSG? - who are also doing gold plated versions of their guns.

Hmmm, the general view of the reviews I've read seems to be to stay clear of anything remotely GSG. The Errma M1 carbine seems an possibility though, and does anyone have any experience of the Walther bullpup ? I quite like bullpups, even the L85A2. Especially the L85A2 in fact, so something similar in .22LR certainly has an appeal

Walther G22 - loved it! Really, really regret selling mine. :cool2: Fortunately, I sold it to a mate, who basically begged me to sell it to him!

I choose it for similar reasons, having used the Steyr AUG in the RAAF. My mate thought it was very similar the L85A2 in feel, but that might be just because it's a bullpup.

It's not without faults, most people dislike the trigger, which I understand but I didn't find that big a problem. For me it was fiddly to clean if you stripped it right down and if you tightened the stock too tight the magazines won't go back in - too loose and they fall out.

Reallistically, it's no worse than some of the other SA 22's out there, better than others and can be picked up fairly cheaply SH. Although, I feel like something different my thoughts keep coming back to it. If I can't find something that really takes my fancy, I think it'll be another G22, but I am getting my hands one a Erma EM-1 on Wednesday so we'll see.
