Apart from using red-dot type optics "both eyes open" can work at close range on iron sights when using front sight only...with either a pistol, rifle or shotgun. At longer distances with iron sights you should aim properly.
However practice using the sights and trigger control is still the best way to hit the target.

Opps , give it to ME , even in a b****** straight pull , I will take IT .
what a load of dribble , I have used a Aussie made AUG for quite a few yrs , and its one of the few 223 assault rifles I would want to own , IF I could .
The other 223 would be something like a SIG550 , Opps , yeap fired one of those too .
I am very impressed with the ruggerness & ergo of the weapon , never had any trouble with the 30rd mags at all , seen them thrown up onto the back of a Unimog truck & chucked onto the floor of M113s and stood on .
And thru all that the the rifles still shoot well & held zeros .
Simple two part FIX for the trigger mech , \
1 ) pull the mech out , carefully pull it apart , get a swiss file and some 1200 grit wet & dry paper , and as the hammer & sear are plastic moldings they have a center spure line that usually dose nothing to promote a good even pull , simply file this rig down so the parts have NO center line so its NOT there any more ( level ) .
The re-assemble .
2 ) Squirt some dry graphite powder into IT as well , and you are DONE .
Its a dead simple & easy FIX , that really works well .
As far as I am concerned , the Steyr AUG is a much better rifle than most think , because they listen to American dribble , Opps too much as the M16 is the ONLY choice .
Of all the main Bulpups , the SA80 , Famas etc , the one I would pick and be happy to take into combat , would be the std 20 inche AUG by a country mile .
In my experince , the AUGs are made to a much higher std overal than any of the M16s I have seen in servive .
Until you have really carried one and used one alot , you donot appreicate how well its been thought out , for a rightie any way , very simlar to the controls on say the HK MP5/53 interms of cocking hand / mag changes etc .
Rember the fold down handle , Opps , yeap , see others ripping that off & putting it on M16s etc .
The main Fault ( major ) according to the USA , is that the rifle cannot be shoot from the left shoulder , and for that reason they dump on IT .
BUT , Opps , I never hear that Fault being mentioned in reguards to the SA80 .
It never gave it a second thought , BUT , if I was concerned , would just mount a day laser , opps sorted .
If you are a leftie , all you need is a LH bolt , to drop nto the bolt carrier & you are sorted , more or less , yeap used a leftie as well , and although its OK , you do whack your wrist while using the cocking handle , as it is more set up for right hand use .
Its a very under rated system , maybe , because ITs NOT American or German .

Chris
I only thing I disagree with is
... , yeap used a leftie as well , and although its OK , you do whack your wrist while using the cocking handle , as it is more set up for right hand use .
I used a LH Steyr for 5 years and I found the IA drills and the cocking as easy as the RH version. It boils down to how LH/RH dominant you are.

I can actually and do shoot with both eyes open, whatever the gun or sighting system, be it handgun or rifle, iron sights, red-dot, low mag scope or a 24x power.....
I was taught well a long time ago.

I was always told to shoot with both eyes open, doesn't make a difference to me, my left eye is blind
