As I have always said (after I stole it from someone else), wanting to pursue a career in politics automatically makes the least suited for the job. Those who want power should never have it.

Plato:

"Those who seek power are not worthy of that power."

Tony Benn's five points on democracy:

"What power have you got?

"Where did you get it from?

"In whose interests do you use it?

"To whom are you accountable?

"How do we get rid of you?"

"Anyone who cannot answer the last of those questions does not live in a democratic system."

Anthony Wedgwood-Benn.
A Viscount who spent more money keeping a battered old car on the road than it would have cost to buy a new one................... Just to be one of the people.

As energy minister he closed down more coal pits than Maggie Thatcher because he supported nuclear power. And then screamed at the pit closures during the miners strike .

He was a very wealthy man but thought that he could make poor people rich by making rich people poor.

Frikkin idiot!!!!!!!!!!

He supported nuclear power, and also the separation of church and state.
Plus, he renounced his inherited peerage, so not all bad, then.....

He had one of the finest minds of a post war politician.

That is what any government needs and has been consistently bereft of for decades.

However, we live in an age where politicians use deception and outright lies to manipulate an ignorant population. It is voters who don't know any better that he seeks to influence and with whom to make a name for himself.
This sums up anyone who has ever aspired to hold power over others since humans have existed.
I think it's worse now. At least back in the day politicians were at least decent enough to feel shame if they were caught out in a lie. Indeed, they would often resign.
These days, politicians openly sneer at us with the collusion of "journalists" who peddle their lies for the newspaper barons that donate to their party,
Caught out in a lie? 'Let's just ignore that and move on. Nothing to see here, plebs.'
