Having only ever loaded 174 FMJBT ( ex Kranks) what options are there with the dreaded cast boolits ? How much can I tell the missus that I have saved ( always a source of brownie points :shifty: !) ?

Seriously though folks...... As the world is getting more expensive, any savings to allow more bangs would be welcome

Hi Simong :)

I found this link posted by Dromia a while back: http://www.full-bore.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=810

Also some questions to all please:

Other than cost, would there be any advantages to using cast boolits in an SMLE? Or any disadvantages?

In the link above, it quotes a load for a .303 170-180 grn boolit giving 1500-1600 fps - the powder is Hercules, which I know nothing of...what would be the equivilent in Vhit N140? or other Vhit powder?

What are the velocity limitations with .303 cast boolits? (I think I understand the gas checked thing :-P )

Advantages - easier to get a boolit to suit your rifle than a condom off the shelf one, you are in charge of quality control so ultimately greater accuracy. Cheaper. Another facet of reloading, boolit casters are the only handloaders who come near to making their own ammunition. A greater understanding of your rifle and its ballistics internal and external

Hercules is now Alliant. 2400 = VV N 110 or 120.

Velocity limitations, none if you get good boolit fit and a not too hard, malleable alloy
I've still got some more questions about the 'dark arts' - but I'll be seeing you Sunday...so I can ask you then :good:

Going back to the subject of cost....

I've loaded 100 rounds of .303 for the weekend, and I reckon it's cost me £25 (not including cases), and 5 hours of time. This has saved me over £40 - which will cover my club range fee on the Saturday, and my comp fees for the Trafalgar :good:
