7.62/.308 or 7.62x39?

I recently put in a variation for a 7.62 rifle which was granted no problem, also asked to hold 600 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, also granted.

However they removed my 7.62/.308 ammo holding! So back it went for another variation to fix.

Have asked it to list x600 7.62 and x300 .308 in separate lots. Fingers crossed I don't get slots for 600 7.62 rifles

You could have pushed the boat out and asked for a thousand of each........

Haha! I was actually reading a post last night about the new regulations for RFDs and the notification requirements for deacts and sad as it is I do quite enjoy reading legislation but stuff me if they don’t deliberately try to obfuscate when firearms are involved.

On your ticket it says "calibre" which in this case is 7.62/308. It does not mention case length.
That's my argument when buying anyway
If you put a case length eg:54R when you asked for the relevant slot and its put on your ticket then you have limited yourself further for buying.
Ambiguity is king in these situations so also ask for .22RF instead of .22LR

interesting i have several 7.62's from x39,x51 and x67 but had to put specific case lengths down or was told to , will see what happens when i ask for next variation.

It has been my experience that I have needed 7.62x39 or 7.62x54r listed on my FAC in order to buy rifles and ammunition in these chamberings, the one time I tried to buy a Mosin to fill a 7.62/.308 slot I was told I couldn't and would need a variation for "7.62x54r".To be honest ever since then I've never been bothered about listing the actual chambering when putting in for a variation or whatever as I've always had a pretty good idea of what I want to buy.

I was told by my FLD that "7.62/.308" is "usually" interpreted as being 7.62x51 NATO and/or its commercial .308 Winchester variant, although "7.62" listed on its own would be ok.

I know of a number of dealers that won't sell a 7.62x39 or 7.62x54r rifle or ammunition to someone that only has"7.62/.308 listed on their FAC, but as others have said they haven't had a problem and it depends on how other RFD's/Firearms Departments interpret things.

Below is a line from a well known dealers website regarding 7.62x54r Mosins........

*** Note: The correct Variation for a Mosin Nagant is "7.62" or "7.62x54". A Variation for a "7.62/308" is Not Valid For a Mosin Nagant ***

And another anomaly as i have several 7.62's including x39's and x51 s they have given separate quantities allowable for x51 and listed 308 as a separate entity.

and .308, no one has ever had an issue with it, keeps it nice and simple.

To my mind thats wrong, and I don't think I'd get away with it in my Force area but as said many times different Forces interpret things differently.

A type of comment likely to increase any fears they might have along those lines.

Despite the fact that even if every FAC holder was allowed a collection of fully automatic weapons, including heavy machine guns, they are too few in number and too dispersed to mount any form of insurrection.

Yes Simple and very Wrong, you are liable to get yourself into serious trouble, I am surprised that your local Firearms Licensing has been letting you get away with this. This idea that just putting 7.62/.308 and then buying anything that has 7.62 ammunition has been doing the rounds for a long time and is very much outside the spirit of the law. The ballistic performance of 7.62x25 is vastly different from 7.62x54r!

The only reason I think this idea has gained ground is due to the situation that back in the day there wasn't as many different exotic calibres being sold in the UK market and just putting 7.62/.308 was going to be used for a rifle chambered in 7.62x51 and .308. Using it as an excuse to get whatever you want as long as the ammunition has 7.62 as part of its designation is operating waaaay outside the spirit of the law.

In the end this about what ammunition will safely chamber in a gun so for example .38Special and .357 Magnum will safely chamber together in the same gun making a shared variation reasonable the same goes for .223/5.56x49 and .308/7.62x51.

On the other hand a 7.62x54r round will not chamber in a gun chambered for 7.62x39 and you certainly shouldn't be putting 7.62 on your ticket only and then buying both, the Firearms Dealers you buy off should also not be humouring such things.

The only time you should just be putting the calibre down is if you are buying a black powder pistol, whereupon your variation for the pistol will mention the calibre only for example .45 or .357.

Likewise if buying rimfire you need to be specifying the type so .22lr or .22wmr would not be acceptable just as .22

Do yourself and shooting in general a favour and get you FAC sorted out correctly and stop spreading myths about what you can get away with, it harms the cause and gives the antis ideas!
