Most of the so called rescue knives are a joke nothing more than toys really. One of the best pocket knives for serious rescue work is the Eickhorn.

Theres always a good use for a knife, and they come in handy at the oddest of times, but I dont know the legal ramifications of carrying one out and about?

The UK law on knives specifically is as follows:

• It is illegal to carry a sharp or pointed object (it does not specify a knife)
• An exemption to this is a folding pocket knife with a cutting edge not greater than 3" in length
• Case law established that a folding pocket knife with a blade that locks in the open position is not in fact a 'folding' pocket knife

Additionally, it is illegal to carry any article whatsoever that is designed or adapted (i.e. modified or 'adopted for the purposes of') causing injury (an 'offensive weapon' - even if it doesn't have curse words written on it).

However: How often are you searched by the police? Most people never have been and never will be. Even if you are found with an illegal knife, 20% get a caution, 30% get a community sentence, 13% get a suspended sentence, and only 21% get sent to prison. The starting point for a prison sentence is 12 weeks, and 40% of those jailed get this or less. That's based on both the offence of possessing a sharp or pointed object, and of possessing an offensive weapon where the weapon in question was a knife. You actually have a better chance of a caution and less chance of jail time if it is recorded as an offensive weapon.

So I wouldn't suggest you take much notice of the law, and if you do carry something illegal then try and get nicked for an offensive weapon instead of a knife!

My Leatherman click, permanently attached to my belt when I was working, now stays in the car as the blade is deemed to lock, following a similar conversation.

A double ++ from me. Hennie I would recommend thoroughly.

I have several Coldsteel knives, a sheathed stalking knife, a short sheathed blade and a folder somewhere (I'm the kind of former Boy Scout who keeps different knives here and there in different parts of my kit) in my camera kit.

I own about half a dozen Opinel knives in various sizes. They are excellent as they hold a decent edge and are cheap enough not to worry about losing one.

Most of my shooting coats have one in the pocket

I would throw the Gerber Gator in to the mix - had one for over 20 years now, having picked one up at Patrick USAFB in '91

None of the above, well apart from the caution seem like a good idea if I want to retain my firearms license!

True, I guess I take that for granted as I could just stop working in the UK if I did ever lose my license! None the less, I think people worry about the letter of the law far too much. You're very unlikely ever to get caught so carry what you want
