No, 1945 was picked as date that separates bolt action military rifle development from the automatic rifle, nothing is neat so a likely date was picked.

There are classic auto and semi auto designs but as they are banned in this country all we have is straight pull pretendy substitutes which misses the essential part of their operating interest. These single shot variants are in the main fullbore rifles made for a civilian market so neither meet the military or historic aspects of this forum.

Why the word "pretendy".....not is not even a real word!.Both my AKM and SVD are produced on the same production lines as military rifles using the same parts to the same design albeit with the absence of a hole and a gas piston, and when the trigger is pulled a bullet leaves the barrel so I don't see how they are "pretend" rifles.

Never mind......at least the SKS gets in!

308" 7.62x39????........where from???.

I dont know mine is .311 as I said . Actually its not .311 as the chamber cast and bore slug showed. This led me to purchase a custom mould from NOE in America for it this improved the group size dramatically. What also helped was removing the factory flash hider and sorting out the muzzle crown.
But none of this is going to help our freind in his choice of 7.62/.308 you could try and source a Columbian mauser a lot of them were rechambered in .308. Or what about an Enfield T4 a cracking rifle.

That's my point.....7.62x39 is .311" (actually Russian/ComBloc military 7.62x39 goes from .310" to 312" depending on date/plant produced etc.....same goes for military 54r).Never seen it with .308" bullets.

If you look on the internet there are hundreds of discussions on .308 bullets in the 7.62x39. Lees dies come with a .308 and a .311 expander. Not all 7.62x39 rifles are military. I have to admit I personally have never come across one in .308 they are normally .310/.311. But as I said none of this is going to help the original poster in his search for a 7.62/.308.

My 7.62x39 shot really well when I first got it then the groups started to open up I was struggling to get a group at 25 yards. I took the muzzle break off and the barrel crown was in a shocking state. I sorted that out and made a new break for it . Then I did the chamber cast on Dromias advice and slugged the bore. Once I acquired the custom mould things changed dramaticaly it now shoots great again. I would like to try it with a heavier jacketed bullet but I have had no success finding load data for them. A 174 grain enfield bullet in .311/.312 would be intresting.

Any way lets get back to 7.62/.308. Shall we.

7.62/.308 isn't really going to get a pre-'45 actioned rifle unless it has been rebarreled/rechambered, best bet is a variation for the appropriate chambering for whichever rifle is decided upon....whether that is 7.62x54r, .30-06 or whatever

Ok guys I have decided to widen my criteria to a rifle of any age and era as long as it fits my 7.62/.308 slot on my ticket.My Longbranch. 303 Lee-Enfield will have to do ...till the next variation. .thanks again
