Now that's an interesting question. I know that even a Ruger 10-22 becomes an E-Cat of you put one of the 30 round high-capacity magazine on it so I suspect that even with a pump-action AR, if you stuck a 30 round mag on it, the Police would sure try to treat it as an E Cat. Last Firearms Act amendment they even changed the rules to treat a 30 round mag, pinned to 7 or less as a restricted item because it 'appears' to hold more than 10 rounds. I suspect a pump-action AR, which 'appears' to be a semi would attract a similar level of scrutiny. Next time I run across a Firearms Officer, I'll ask them.

Yes, but you are underestimating the appearance factor. A Remington pump action rifle is one thing - an obviously sporting rifle with nice wooden stock - not very threatening to the uneducated. An AR, pump action or not, is entirely different. The great unwashed would immediately think 'assault rifle' = evil! Much NZ firearms law is predicated on appearances. As I indicated the law was recently changed to require, for example an import permit for magazines that 'appear' to hold more than 10 rounds - even when they don't. A 30 round magazine on an A-Cat pump-action AR, might well be strictly legal, but if people start doing it, I will bet you dollars to doughnuts that Police would quickly move to change the law to make it illegal.

And that does have a polymer stock, plus the ability to fit AR furniture which is why the aussies love them.

Plus it was a kiwi land shop I saw online that had the troy and the battlemags in 30 round cap (they are $65 kiwi and appear to be the cheapest AR mags there).
