I've handed firearms licensing paperwork in an addressed envelope over the counter of police headquarters that has mysteriously disappeared before making the journey up one flight of stairs to the firearms licensing department.

Unless you are handing it in person to a member of firearms licensing staff - it's probably more reliable to use the postal system!

I can't get past reception at my Police HQ, never mind the hallowed ground of the Firearms dept, I always phone and email to let them know I will bring it over, probably a waste of time, but at least I have a paper trail of events.

Our FLD is actually separate from the Police HQ, by several miles.... I drive past the FLD on my way to and from work, but all paperwork has to go through the Police HQ.

I have once been to the FLD when they made a typo on a variation, so I rang and arranged to go pick up a corrected one, but AFAIK the public are not allowed anywhere near it... a Lady met me at the barrier, we swapped wrong for corrected FACs, she opened the barrier to allow me to turn the car around then I went again.

Been to same venue.

I got past barrier but as I walked up the path, I was hailed by a man from behind a window in the FLO building.

He opened the window and passed the new FAC to me.

try calling them direct once you are there, tell them you are outside and want to drop it off?

Dustyman wrote:Just a heads up , one of our syndicate members has had his certificate stolen in the post . It was sent to police firearms for a variation and therefore was adressed as such . It was sent registered post but this apparently has no guarantee of safe delivery only signed either end for proof of delivery . The letter arrived but had been torn open and the certificate removed . Special delivery apparently is safer . Also we are asking if the police if there is a different way to address firearms related postage to them . Just a warning that I though might be worth flagging up . Sorry if covered before or if most already know but I must say I didn't realise the difference between the two postal services , cheers Ian
Didn't know you posted on here Ian. I have been trying to get someone from Royal Mail to investigate, but all they are interested in is me making a claim for compensation. How the hell do I make a claim for something that isn't worth anything monetarily but is of huge impact if lost.
Over the last 5 years we have had over a £1,000 worth of stuff ordered from ebay/Amazon/Play.com etc stolen by one of the postmen, and that was from my house alone. We made a formal complaint to Royal Mail and it took over a year before he was eventually arrested. He had over £500 worth of stuff in his house but swore blind that he had only just started stealing. Which is madness because over the 2 years that things had gone missing in the area we reckon he must have gone through £20,000 - £30,000 worth of stuff.

I now have to fill in a form and post it to their compensation dept before they can start an investigation into where my ticket has gone.
Absolutely crazy.

I have always thought in over 35 years as a shooter that sending paperwork to an address with Firearms Licensing in it is a bad thing!
I have always felt uneasy going to post office to get it sent. My local PO is in a shop and I go in there a few times a week.
I now go to a local cop shop and have it sent within their internal postal system.
This has its pitfalls as there doesn't seem to be a fixed time frame.
My last renewal paperwork took about 7 days from local cop shop to HQ.
There must be a better way. Maybe just have a random name or reference in the HQ address?
I usually put FL Dept.

One time I went into the post office to send my ticket back for a variation had it sent by recorded delivery and the old woman behind the counter looked at the evelope and said in sort of joking type "do you have a gun?" :bad:

I had one of the guys at the post office asking to come shooting when I was posting my original application. Pointed him in the direction of a well established local club.

The Met Police will not allow that to happen! Has to be sent to the appropriate location.
