I find the 244/243 way too much gun for the smaller deer including roe.

The treble two is the perfect calibre for what you wish to do.

I had not thought of a 222, they seem to be out of fashion these days. I had my hands on a Zastava mini Mauser in .222 a while ago and it was a cracking little rifle and he been picked up by the owner for not a lot of money. It was light as well.

Alpha, what weight bullet are you shooting and how is it looking at 200 yards?

One of the best reasons there can be for acquiring a gun/calibre.

Popularity and fashion are no indication of the ability, appropriateness, quality and suitability of a gun/calibre, it only indicates that the marketing spin has been gullibley swallowed.

Useless bloody things just too big for the pot/oven and too small to be worth butchering.

I do agree a .222 would tick all of the boxes for the needs of this particular slot.

I would take one over a Fallow when it comes to flavour and we still have a nice lump in the freezer from a couple of weeks ago that will go into the slow cooker with a load of vegetables this coming week. :p

Or a break barrel single shot like the Baikal in the same most excellent calibre.
Couldn't agree more.
