Seller sends in form as does buyer....That's the way it's supposed to be done.

Greenshoots is correct, only two notifications need be sent in regarding your purchase, one by the seller (or transferrer) and the other by you (the transferee).
The RFD is just handing over your firearm after checking you are authorised to possess it (i.e. in this case the seller has written the appropriate details on your FAC).

If I understand your post correctly how you are doing it is not the way it is meant to be done. The latest guidance tries to reinforce this.

If the RFD sells it to you then he is the transferrer and will write on your FAC and also notify the police. The previous owner will let his police know it has been transferred to an RFD, but if you buy it from the previous owner directly (through GT, the equipment exchange on FB, any other distance selling method) then all the paperwork is done by you and the original owner, not the RFD(s).


The Guidance also allows for electronic means of notification (with suitable recording of the fact).

Matt, this is how I see it as well, one thing I will add is I will enter the firearm onto my register and then out the new owner however I will not notify the Police of the transaction. I will be running this past my FEO when he calls in next time to confirm I am correct in my actions which are based on the Bedfordshire way of working. As you have probably gathered I don't buy new stuff very often. I'm very selective in what I buy. When I do buy stuff I tend to keep it forever.
Any way the Guy I bought them off has emailed my licencing authority with the details of the sale and emailed me a copy so I guess it must be Ok to notify them by email so that's what I will do. Thanks for all the input.

Yes, all items should be recorded if they come in to the possession of the RFD, as I see it.

But if the owner comes in and shows it to me and then leaves with it I believe I haven't taken possession so I don't record it. However, if I do any work on it while they wait I do record it in and out just so there is a paper trail.

I email Surrey, either the form filled in myself when I have bought privately, or else I scan and send the form given me by the RFD, which he has also emailed to them. I get an automatic email reply which I then keep with my originals.

That would be ridiculous. What if someone comes in to buy a gun-slip and needed to ensure it fits? You do not touch it, he lays it on the selection of slips, makes a choice, pays and leaves? Or what about someone going out shooting that calls in to purchase some additional rounds or cartridges and happens to have the gun in a slip over the shoulder?

Can you imagine the paperwork at a clay ground where you pay in the shop which happens to be an RFDs premises?

my rfd sends forms in for me, but i have had my legs smacked in past for not sending my own form in so my rfd always sends one and I do as well, go figure

I think the RFD's have to inform them.... otherwise you could "forget" to inform them and they'd have no record of it at all...

I suppose if both parties have to send in forms, or emails, it stops a dodgy RFD selling to someone off-ticket but saying it was to someone with an FAC who knows nothing about it until their next renewal..??

I checked my licencing authority web site. They have a form they prefer you to use it says you can post it in or email it to them as an attachment. I just wondered what you would do if you did not have access to a computer or the internet. Ill just sent it as an attachment the form is quite simple so I will use it.
