Thank you, some people cannot see the wood for the trees. :good:
And I should have added that all the other arguments are spurious at best. The credibility of the Lead Action Group being destroyed by the mass resignations of members prior to the submission of the partisan and prejudiced report to Natural England.

Marmite5 wrote:You suggested lead was not poisonous, I simply pointed out it is and provide references. You seem to be a very angry argumentative man, why is that?

Interesting, are they now saying lead shot is not dangerous to wildfowl?

I have not seen the report. But those that have resigned are saying that the ban should not be widened to other types of shooting.

Not read whole thread , so apologies if I repeat something, the daftest thing is that if it goes through the majority of EU will just ignore it anyway, except no doubt the good old brits. I've added my signature and emailed my MP.

Actually, I think it was me that suggested that lead---the metal--is not poisonous. I am not angry or argumentative. Lead oxidizes and reacts with acids to form salts, which are poisonous. When people talk about lead entering the blood stream etc causing brain damage and so on, they are not talking about the metal itself, which is what we put into the ground when we shoot. I acknowledge that this lead will eventually poison the soil / backstop but it will still not be as poisonous as the ore that we took out of the ground to smelt into the pure metal.

Hmmm, so:

1. being shot poisons you extremely quickly and you die
2. not being shot poisons you extremely slowly and you die

Have we got this lead issue sussed properly, oomans ?

Remember leaded petrol? tetra-ethyl lead was added to petrol to stop pre-ignition ("pinking"). Surveys of busy roads, mostly in the USA, were carried out and it was demonstrated that lead levels were very high adjacent to these roads. There were many great scare stories published about the potential for brain damage in children and the use of lead products in gasoline was universally banned. Now the USA is very fond of litigation. Upset your neighbour, damage him / her in some way and you will be in court with the lawyers asking for millions in compensation. To date, I have seen no court cases reported where claimants are asking for compensation for damage caused by lead in petrol.
The automotive industry had to look for some other anti-knock additive and what they came up with was benzine. Benzine causes cancer. During the WW2 period, benzine was used as an alternative to gasoline. Many military and commercial vehicles had the filler cap under the drivers seat and this gave rise to a new problem, known as "jeep drivers disease". The seat cushion became soaked in benzine over time and the drivers started to get ulcers on the tops of their thighs which did not heal. In extreme cases, they turned to cancer. My father died of it.
You will understand that I am cynical about banning things, with no alternative or one that is not understood properly offered.
