Isn't the equivalent of .375 H&H normally the minimum energy levels required to shoot the larger species in most African countries?
Also while I am a great fan of large calibre hard cast bullets, are they really appropriate for shooting some of the animals he shot.
evidently they do seem appropriate according to the write up ?

I remember reading about the 45/70 loads and there three pressure levels the top one of which approached 458 winmag energy's!

I know nothing of Africa or the big game there, but, I can tell you, from personal experience, that a 300 gr JHP 45-70 will drop a 505 lb grizzly bear right where it stands, from 80 meters. I know it's not an elephant, but it's a big animal, and that cartridge hits with a hell of a wallop, close-in.

I looked up the ammo mentioned in the report and selected the ammo with the highest velocity when comparing his ammo to a .375H&H.

Isn't a fully jacketed bullet rather than a JSP the bullet normally used to obtain the necessary penetration in for example a .375 when shooting the larger dangerous game animals. If so how can a hard cast bullet have comparable structural integrity.

it's about bullet weight and penetration also a slower bullet can often penetrate better than a faster lighter bullet.

how do you think selous and his contemporary's killed big stuff before the advent of jacketed bullets?
