You want a M1 in .308 they already make one its called the M1A for the civilian market or M14 for the military version in the US. In the UK he sells the M14 of course straight pull. but why would you want one in .223 you would buy a AR15....

I personally wouldn't want a .223 version, but it might sound attractive to someone who is already tooled up to load .223 and doesn't want to go the expense of adding another calibre to their list.

Of course the Barrel is new! Its made by a different maker, not L. Walther.
Its pointless making different caliber's in M1's as the work to change it is massive, whats the point? The 30-06 extracts REALLY well much better then a 7.62/308 so why ruin a good gun. As to 223, I did a batch of them in the L1A1's and although they were "slightly" easier to cock, the issue is with the bolt unlocking, not the cartridge case. Even with the extractor removed it was still "stiff" to unlock the bolt in 7.62/308.
No body wanted a 223/5.56 L1A1 so I wont do that again!
SVT40 was built from a complete gun. Now he is in prison as of the 5th Dec. The court case will be interesting!

Glad to read that UK shooters are getting into M1 rifle goodness! About 10-20k or so of the Italian M1 rifles made it to the U.S. before importation was stopped. Then the Danish-Italian rifles came in as parts kits sans receivers until that method was stopped. We did get a lot of U.S. made military aid rifles sent to Denmark back when they were finished with them. I picked up a S.A. sitting in a Danish made beech stock with a Navy rear sight cover via the Civilian Marksmanship Program which was the outlet for the returned rifles.

In the UK I think there has always been an interest in the M1 Rifle and for that matter, the Carbine as well. M1 Garands, Carbines and M14 rifles were quite common on the ranges before the Government banned them in the late 80s.

I had a nice 1951 Springfield M1 Garand before the ban. Sadly I now have to resort to a straight pull version that I acquired back in 2002. Still a pleasure to shoot and amazingly accurate, it just lacks the extra fun of being semi automatic.

Judging by the rate at which this new batch of Garands has sold, the interest will never go away..........until everything is banned that is.

Good article on the Prototype Garands by the way, read about it but never seem images before.
