Re: NRA email : homeoffice guidlines change random home chec
The phrase "your sort" was fairly derogatory - it takes all "sorts" to make a world.
My "sort" is the type of person who knows that the police can come knocking anytime they like and they won't find anything out of place or anything untoward. Even if my rifle is in bits drying out or sitting there between shoots it is NEVER unattended or unlocked as I know it needs to be secure or someone might revoke my certificate the same as I know I can't go round randomly murdering people as someone might put me in prison.
An ex-friend of mine had his certificate revoked for leaving three guns out and unattended when a visitor saw them and reported him to the police. His fault, his mess, his responsibility - he had to deal with the consequences - no sympathy from me but it did serve to remind everyone who knew him to be extremely careful about their own security.

Picture this it's 8pm I decide to get a beer and clean my guns in the process I get a knock on the door from uniform plod (not co19) and ask to check my security and let them in and tell I'm cleaning my firearms what to stop them sending a report to the firearms team that my guns were out of my safe and had a can of beer open ??? I think this way of backdoor disarming law abiding people (not just the ones that shouldn't have them but everyone )
How did you manage to get ppw in NI ? Am i right in thinking you had to prove you were under threat ? Not just because you wanted one ?

Mr_Logic wrote:No, you are totally missing the point. You can act on intelligence and get a warrant. The issues then were insane shooters, not issues around firearms storage.
My privacy should not be removed just because I own a gun. How is that fair or reasonable? I know the government has already infringed it, but why the hell should we just lie down each time? The authorities have no basic right to enter my home; warrants are there to provide oversight by a judge. Why do we not deserve the oversight? They still need a warrant if we're talking drugs etc!
I agree.
Forget about being a FAC holder for a moment. If you as a non shooting private citizen had police turn up to have a look around your house, you would be aggrieved.
If intelligence exists, get a warrant.
If you want to fish, not in my house !!!!!

The full details of this are due to be released on Monday and the UKPSA rep to BSSC has said he's not impressed with what's proposed (he's seen it but has been gagged until it's full release). Fun times ahead(!)

He just left them laying around in his room and I think on the landing - the visitor (who was visiting a family member) went to the bathroom and was rather worried at what he saw so called the police. He had had a previous revocation which he successfully appealed so this was a second offence and that was that.joe wrote: What was the circumstances of your friends leaving his unsecured ?
BTW he is now deceased otherwise I would not be discussing it.
My then husband was in the UDR and so had one for his use (but of course I also knew how to use it - luckily I never had to).joe wrote: How did you manage to get ppw in NI ? Am i right in thinking you had to prove you were under threat ? Not just because you wanted one ?
And yep we were on an IRA hit list - some people may remember a briefcase being stolen from an Army guy at a market in early 90s. That briefcase contained (amongst other things) all our personal details and we ended up on a hit list so our house got a total makeover (which was annoying as we had just paid for new double glazing  ) and we got the works - motion sensors, cameras, lights, video entryphone, new garage, special windows and blinds, panic buttons etc). Luckily peace broke out soon after.
They were interesting times . . .

This is a country of laws and policing by consent. I'm happy to show my security to an authorized officer - if he makes an appointment
If the police have 'intelligence' or 'information received' as we used to call it when I was an officer (SOCO) then they can get a warrant.
In thirty years the UK has gone from an incredibly liberal and free country to an Orwellian police state in which we are continually spied upon, we have virtually lost the right to silence, almost every minor transgression has become an arrestable offence, trial by media is commonplace, we've lost the right of assembly (we actually have to ask for permission to gather and protest), and have draconian legislation that permits the state unprecedented powers over us with a dismissive wave of 'National Security'. Quite recently the Government were sounding out the possibility of secret courts - which is the natural progression of over powerful states. They're already monitoring our emails, phone use and web browsing. A vast number of people even write their own file notes. logging their every movement, political leanings, and known associates on Facebook - how the authorities must laugh at that one. Especially as every now and then someone actually admits to some thought crime or, indeed, actual crime, and plod duly take their written confession and arrest them
People that take the 'well, if you've got nothing to hide, you've nothing to fear attitude' disgust me. It is naive beyond comprehension. That and cowardice. It's the easy way out - just comply and it'll be all over soon and you can get back to lolling in front of the telly. The constant chipping away of our rights and due process has made us the most spied upon country in the Western world. And it still hasn't made us any safer - we have the most violent crime stats in Europe per capita. Indeed, statistically England suffers more violent crime than South Africa.

Well I'm sorry that I "disgust" you - not that it bothers me. I don't "comply"; its not "cowardice" - it's just the way I was brought up to do things right.Dark Skies wrote: People that take the 'well, if you've got nothing to hide, you've nothing to fear attitude' disgust me. Like Karen I’m sorry that I disgust you. I did say further up the thread that I do see your point of view it’s just that it’s just different to mine.
I feel that saying that I disgust you is unnecessary, aggressive and confrontational when I clearly have shown none of those qualities towards you.
On the bright side when I first started posting on this thread I had a bet with my wide that some numpty would type “Police State” before the end of the day so I’m £5.00 up now!!!

We should revoke the FAC|SGC of everyone who thinks arguing (of the grumpy sort) and insult slinging on the internet achieves anything.......
