You know what? I don't actually see what difference banning semi-auto makes. Granted, it reduces rate of fire - but not to the extent that it would greatly affect a body count should someone go bananas. If anything, bolt action/straight pull forces good shot placement whereas semi-auto would increase the likelihood of indiscriminate fire (and thus less accurate).

I can kinda see the vague reasoning behind the handgun ban (concealement) but to me there's no technical justification - whatsoever - for banning semi-auto.

Whereas the UK legisaltion knows exactly where to cut to make an actual difference (for the worse) to the gun i.e. the action :bad:
That's what I'm thinking. At least our laws follow and stick to some sort of logic.

Imagine being told in New Zealand you can have that factory standard semi AR15 on a CAT A but that military style pistol grip has to go. That doesn't make sense.

It has always seem to me the anti's in America, Aus & NZ are more obsessed with the appearance of a firearm. They have convoluted laws defining what an assault weapon is or what is military looking. It's a case for them of form rather than function whereas here HMG post Hungerford went for function, ie no centre fire semi auto.
This is something I can live with and I say this as somebody who had a L1A1 and an AKM pre-ban.

Semi auto is over-rated unless all you want to do is bump fire or do a high speed mag dump.

So an AK in this configuration would be legal.

I disagree strongly with your position. Having to re-cock between shots, particularly when prone, disturbs the firing position and degrades accuracy (not to mention it being a complete pain in the ass).

It's not something I'm happy to 'live with', that's for sure. Are you saying you'd not want s/a reinstated?

Until the most recent amendment to the Arms Act in NZ, as long as the magazine didn't hold more than 7 rounds, it could be held on an A Category licence. Now, if the magazine holds or appears to hold more than 10 rounds, it becomes E Category. Still legal, but you need a different endorsement on your licence.

Our laws are fine as long as they stay as they are.

I looked at moving to Boston but their laws suck!

Mag size issues, mod issues, assault weapon features etc

You still need a FAC as well.

I'll be honest I don't really care about semi auto on centre fire.

It costs too much and is not great for shot placement as the OP says

However, I think it would be nice to just press a button on an AR style rifle between shots instead of having to use a side charger.

bolts are quite relaxing to use as well in my humble opinion

It depends on the type of shooting you're wanting to do. If you're lying prone and you've got all day long to drop 10 shots on a target then yes action type doesn't really matter. Personally speaking i don't get 'the buzz' from that type of shooting, but each to their own. I want to be able to shoot fast, against the clock, (as well against other people) and preferably while moving at the same time

Graham,

You chose unwisely tongueout. There are forty three other States that don't have the liberal anti gun BS laws that the seven (Massachusetts included) libtard anti gun States have.

Never had that problem with any of my semi auto rifles, the shots go exactly where i want them to go. Cost too much, sure it does if you're buying factory ammo, not if you're reloading it doesn't. Not over here that is.
