That is what I do not really understand, if he did it and the State has all the evidence, then why not publish the records/interviews/transcripts connected with this case?

To protect the relatives? Yes, that I can understand, on the other hand would they not want the theories to stop?

I found this...

http://southeastasianews.org/portarthur ... cript.html

No way of knowing if that is legit.

Just thinking that instead of all these conspiracy theories why not just publish it all. It has been nearly 20 years.

He plead guilty and was sentenced - no trial as such.

Basically, it was a 'perfect storm' : Dunblane + Port Arthur + Shocked public + Strong Federal Govt + Fractured and bickering States = New firearms laws.

End of story

Edit:

Because I doubt it's an issue in Australia - except for some shooters. Even if the facts were published there will be still be some that will never believe them.

SG, very true, some people no matter what you tell them won't listen and won't change their mind.

Ah, just realised SG...that was not a dig at you. That was meant for the conspiracy theorists.

Only thing is just that there are groups out there who think that something is not right. Why not just give them whatever they are asking for?

On that we agree.

Regarding Mcgregor's speech, the fact that he mentions ASIO makes me laugh. ASIO at that time had a very poor reputation and a series of cock ups under it's belt, so if they'd been involved we'd all know the facts of any conspiracy long before now - leakier than a sieve!

Most of the major ills of the world have been caused by well-meaning people who ignored the principle of individual freedom, except as applied to themselves, and who were obsessed with fanatical zeal to improve the lot of mankind-in-the-mass through some pet formula of their own. The harm done by ordinary criminals, murderers, gangsters, and thieves is negligible in comparison with the agony inflicted upon human beings by the professional do-gooders, who attempt to set themselves up as gods on earth and who would ruthlessly force their views on all others- with the abiding assurance that the end justifies the means." Excellent post Christel (not the gun vandalism one, that is just sheer bloodymindedness) - if only they could see themselves as others see them for what they are.

Just spotted this...
the records of the Port Arthur massacre have been locked away for thirty years making them immune from scrutiny under the Freedom of Information Act
Maybe the files will be released in 2026, maybe not.
