Of course the law allows self defence and in some circumstances with lethal force. However you may well end up explaining yourself to a jury at crown court. A household object which came to hand will go down a lot better than a weapon which has been sold specifically as a weapon. Where you bought it and why suddenly become very relevant.

A shotgun is a little different. In a rural area it might be something that is in use a lot and therefore came to hand. I would not like to test that defence on the council estate I live on..

I think it stinks that a supplier to shooters is pedeling this stuff.......its bad enough that anyone can look on their website and assume all shooters are millionaires from the prices midway charge (which helps us not) but now the public can see that we can buy these things as an alternative in case we get into trouble using our guns to defend our selves and homes.........good job midway, stuffing up the uk shooters in a 2 pronged attack on us....

Just to be on the other side of the fence tesnews How was his shotgun 'to hand'? shouldn't it have been locked away? I'd have trouble getting to my spare keys, then the cabinet, then the rifle and ammo with any degree of speed if someone came into my home.

Now my 3 cell Maglite which is next to the wife's side of the bed is more 'to hand'

Trouble with impact weapons is if the intruder takes it off you and beats you with it! Your better off calling the cops turning all the lights on ,opening the front door to provide them escape and make a ton of noise, whilst screaming at them the cops are coming get out, get out, get out.......if you confront a burglar they will feel trapped and you will not stand in their way.....just open the door and make noise........

Isn't Midway a US franchise? Could this gear not just be a straight clone from their US website, with the prices transposed into £ for the UK market, by some unthinking US web monkey?

Old proverb about cockups and conspiracies applies here methinx...

Great theory - doesn't always work in practice though. Maybe a SPEAR would be OK, from your African curio collection you just happen to have in the bedroom - or even your batlet from your Star Trek souvenirs..

Chuck, the flipside to my previous is the pretext that burglars don't leave an intenery with fellow burglars for tracking purposes, therefore if one was to kill a burglar you wanna do it quietly and keep it quiet, if you wanted to be sure of no no recourse.....me ide take the noise option....
