The MAS is indeed a fine battle rifle and is a good shooter so long as you can shoot blindfold, it has to be the ugliest pre 1945 rifle ever made and you do need to protect your vision and taste sensibilities when being within seeing distance of one.

If you had £1600 to spend, I could suggest something VERY nice in .308

The Mas36 - Is this possibly the worst milsurp ?
you do need to protect your vision

Oh mon Dieu !! Mais que disent ces Roastbeef de malheur ???
Without being partisan (

) I am curious to hear what's wrong with it or maybe could I suggest you guys actually try one ??
450 Martini - The joke about the "drop once" was born because the stock was not as good as the Lee-enfield's one in order to flee in front of the Germans & paddle away from Dunkirk

All jokes appart, the MAS 36 is one of those rifle that has seen active service all around the world, from Europe (May 40 & then FFL), North-Africa, Indochina etc... BTW the FRF1 still in service is a kind of "sniper" distant version of the MAS 36...
it has to be the ugliest pre 1945 rifle ever made
Maybe the MAS 36 is the "Marmite" of mil-surps ? You either love it or hate it

My mistake D!
Chambered for NATO/Winchester as a direct replacement! I should of said!!
I've seen something a bit newer but twice the price.

Ishapore 2A or 2A1 and you would still have money to put an over priced PH 5A aperture sight from b@stard bay on it and buy some ammunition or components.

Mas36 fans...by way of banter not deliberate insult...can you name a rifle from the same era that is worse overall...?

How is it worse overall? Looks, cartridge, history?
I like the Mas and would have one in an instant if I could justify it. I could also make the argument that my Steyr is a worse rifle - a short, light, straight pull, en-bloc fed rifle firing a 208gn bullet at 2300fps with really akward sights! Then again, all of those 'defects' are the reason I wouldn't get rid of it. clapclap
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and for me the Mosin Nagant is not an attractive rifle as are some Mausers but each to their own.
