I was thinking about what you actually informed the police that you had done with the rifle. For instance did you inform that it had been sold or merely lodged with the RFD for disposal.
To be honest if you simply told the dealer that they should sell it for the best price that woud probably be their get out. They only have to say that they tried to sell it for some time and then sold it via the auction when a sale was not forthcoming after a reasonable period of time. After all you had decided to give up your certificate at that time. Unfortunately I doubt that the final amount paid over to you will be what you consider to be the true value of the rifle and I doubt if anything that you say or do now will change that. I also doubt if there will be any means of redress available to you. Like I said earlier you will probably just have to mark it down as a lesson learned.
