im I right in thinking that if a slot is taken away because you don't fill it and you then subsequently find the firearm or funds to fill said slot you can get it preplaced by means of variation ?

Not sure what this means, but if you let a slot lapse then you want a new one after the fact you'll have to make and pay for, a variation

that's what I meant... just didn't word it very well ... so basically if you lose a slot you can get it back with a variation ?

I had a 7.62/308 space unused from 2005-2012 and i was asked if i wanted to keep it on at renewal, i said i did and there was no trouble, i eventually filled it with a Ishapore 2A1 last year. I have heard about people having questions asked about relisting unused slots on renewal, but i have never had any experiance of being told to "get a move on and buy stuff" in the middle of FAC. Are some FEO's making up laws again?

FEOs will not be making up laws however they will be interpreting the guidelines to the best of their abilities.

I keep being told that I have to fill slots inside 12 months however they've never challenged slots that have remained open longer

When I applied for my FAC the question I was asked was "are you intending to buy these in the next 5 years?"

No mention of, say, is this you next 12 months shopping list
