Got to say I use PPU .44 brass and have had no problems with it at all - its been loaded 6 times with 7grs of unique with a light crimp and not a single split.

Was that from new unfired brass or were they from factory loaded rounds?

Personnally I don't go anywhere near PPU brass, Starline is not as good as I thought either as I have had a few split after 2-3 reloads. Winchester has lasted the longest for me and now trying S&B aswell which works well in my M1 Carbine and have 100 for my .357

Any decent new pistol brass should give many many reloads - I've been using the same 400 'RP' cases in my Marlin (and my Winny before that) for 3 years - I've lost count of how many times they've been loaded but some must be over a dozen times...so far I've only had a couple of very small splits in the necks...

I recently got some new 'RP' brass from http://danskgevaer.com though to make sure I don't get any splits at the Phoenix...but intend to continue using the other stuff, as there's still some life left in them...

As an aside - The way I've got my Autodisk set means that when I powder the case the 'belling' action of the die seems to shave a little brass off the rim (I know this is happening as it accumulates on the shell-holder), and by a lucky coincidence (not management) seems to trim the cases by the exact amount they expand by over time - obviously this means the cases will be getting gradually thinner, and I'll have to bin them when I get my first full length split; but they do seem to have lasted very well...and I wonder if this slight shaving action is helping prevent neck splitting...

I have been watching some videos of annealing brass every 5 or so reloads any thoughts ?

It might help if you're work hardening your brass with excessive crimping/sizing etc.

However I have about a 1000 cases of 44Mag from many manufacturers, all were reloaded many time during the pistol days. These have snce been loaded 10s of times since I converted compensation into a Marlin and I have only ever had one case split.

I don't use an aggressive crimp and only fairly light loadings (typically 4.5gn Bullseye with a 220/240 bullet). I'm only punching paper at 25yds and, very occasionally, 50yds so I don't need to over stress things. A crimp sufficient to just hold the bullet during loading and in the mag during firing is what I'm after.

I use a light Lee Factory crimp and like you light loads but still had problems with PPU, this was not used over crimped factory ammo brass but new virgin brass loaded and used exactly the same way as the Starline brass.

The first 100 Starline cases I got from Kranks 2yrs ago are still being used, the 100 PPU I got from them later have all gone in the bin.

I use the Lee TC set but in 44SPL and have backed the dies out for the magnum length. I doubt this will make a difference over a magnum die set.
