Does'nt sound like a rant to me JS569, you make some very good points. There are far too many apologists within the shooting community, we are normal people, and very law abiding, we have to be and I for one would never apologise for particpating in what I believe is mine by right, not privelage as Politicians would have you believe. I am a law abiding Husband, Father and Grandfather and a threat to no one!

Last night an interviewer on the BBC spoke to a SA Firearms Lawyer about SA Gun Law after as part of a report about Mr Pestorious and was constantly trying to steer the conversation down the anti route. It was quite refreshing and good to watch as the Lawyer explained very clearly what the position was and refused to be led in her response, she remained pragmatic and corrected the interviewer several times to keep things factual rather than the usual emotive language and emphasis. Well done her!

I saw this interview - the reporter blatantly tried to blur the distinction between legal and illegal guns...and I'm sure that at one point she was actually inferring that if normal (non-criminals) South Africans couldn't get a gun legally then they would get one illegally kukkuk

As you say, well done to the lawyer, who was having none of it.

Press Complaints Commission response from 5th Feb:

http://www.pcc.org.uk/case/resolved.htm ... e=ODI1OA==
Clauses Noted: 1

Publication: The Sun

Complaint:

Phil Adams was one of 72 individuals who complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article which made inaccurate claims about certain types of guns that had been used in mass shootings and their availability in the UK. The complainant considered that the newspaper had breached Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following correction in both the English and Scottish editions of the newspaper and on its website:
"In a story ‘Massacre guns on sale in UK' we stated that lethal assault rifles like the AR15 weapon used in America's Sandy Hook school massacre are being legally sold in Britain. A Welsh-based firm describes the Ruger SR22 semi-automatic as a ‘clone of the AR15'. We would like to clarify that these replica guns are scaled down versions of the originals, requiring .22 ammunition rather than the more powerful .223 calibre."

Pity they were not forced to put the correction on the front page

And I am disappointed, but not surprised, to find out that the correction was only published because somebody told them that they had been a naughty boy. A good spanking (eg the total retail sale price of the following day's edition, donated to a charity in the field that has been offended) might concentrate their thinking rather more effectively.

This is why the Leveson report recommendations should have been adopted in full. When the press do wrong, they should be properly punished, or at the very least forced to make amends in a very obvious way.

This bit says it all about how effective the PCC is: "The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated..."

Someone else on here somewhere suggested that there should be legislation to the effect that if the media, any media, report anything that is factually incorrect, conjecture, or misleading they should be breaking the law, very good idea in my view.

Media report what they like as long as it is accurate, truthful and delivered in an evenly measured manner. They can offer opinion but in a proper column for that purpose and covered by a clear disclaimer!

PCC is a smoke screen for more of the usual B/S, maintain the status Quo, spout rhetoric!

I also have a return ticket to Cloud Cuckoo Land!
