Bottom line is Service men and Women don't give a monkeys about what it is called - it was either the pistol or the rifle. It is only civvies and wannabes that ever referred to them as the Brownign Hi-power or L1A!, L85A1/2 Etc.

Was the same with planes etc - the crews called them planes the "Spotters" spouted off the C130s GR4s etc.

They are just tools of the trade.

My initial weapons training was on the SLR, L85 and SMG - they were all called the "rifle" or "machine gun" - same when we went on and did LSW, GPMG and LMG. The Browning or later the Sig were just called the "pistol"

Rifle and pistol understood but what did you ask for when you wanted a Sterling not a GPMG?

Can I have a little machine gun please?

PaulR ;) ;) ;)
