Every FAC holder is aware of his / her limits on ammunition storage.
This rule is exactly the same for personnel who habitually go armed as part of their legal profession other than service personnel actually within a recognised war zone In a past life I could never get enough spare ammo over and above my 120 rounds and I habitually carried at least another 100 whilst 'on the ground'.
BUT .... this world of regulation is the world we live in now and sure, we don't have to like it but make no mistake ... this is the real world and if you bend the rules you can expect to get shafted (no matter who you are). There have been enough examples in the press recently.

Notwithstanding any of the above, let's be nice to each other eh?

it doesnt look like he was keeping it as extra ammo for himself though. it seems to suggest he was putting it in other peoples lockers to make them look bad, or possibly get them removed from their posts

since you have never worn the queen's cloth in any guise, you would have no idea how valuable a 'spare' round would be to those whom wear blue or green.

Valuable ? Try illegal.

If one takes a job enforcing the law then one has to adhere to that law.

If you are military and in a combat zone where you might quickly run out of ammo and be far from resupply, fair enough, scrounge some extra.

But UK police carry more than enough for an engagement. And from what I have seen, usually outnumber the badguys by 3 to 1 so not much chance of running out. And back up, for DPG and Royalty protection is literally seconds away.

Oh yes I have worn a uniform............as it seems to be a prerequsite for expressing an opinion.


Oh and funnily enough when police bend the law to get a search warrant or spot check one of you guys and find a few rounds outside your cabinet then prosecute you, you will be the first to scream about police misconduct !!!

I am curious - if you feel police should be allowed to ignore the law re spare rounds, would you support them in giving the odd person a good slapping in the back of the van, as long as they were sure the guy is guilty ?

Maybe unarmed officers who only get one can of cs should be allowed to pop to france to buy an extra one to carry as a back up ?

Everyone who posts on this forum is entitled to their opinion whether they have worn a uniform or not.
We don't have to particularly like their opinion but we should have the courtesy to accept it nevertheless. If the point being made is too controversial then I'm sure the moderators will step in and do the necessary.
This is a shooting forum for all interested parties and not an ex-services forum. As such, a previous life earning the Queen's Shilling is most certainly not a requirement for stating one's particular viewpoint.

It just seems ironic that in one thread you can get opinions ranging from "police using an excuse" ( ie bending the rules ) to prosecute FAC holders and then a few posts later, its ok for Police to bend the rules ( same ones in fact - firearms act ) and illegally possess a few extra rounds !!

It goes back to what I quickly discovered when I was in - Police are always wrong. People always cry out for a robust Police force - who have officers like DI Burnside or Di Reagan who break a few rules to get the job done. And the same people go ballistic when they get prosecuted by what they perceive as an officer going outside the rulebook.

I agree with Brian here, we all seem to want a tough police force when it comes down on the side of others, and a tolerant gentle force when it is us or 'our kind' that is under the spotlight.

The problem I have with this is the lack of good reason for us to be under the spotlight.

It seems totally disproportionate to the risk.

A cynic might say it is just another move to justify a large fees increase.

A really nasty situation developed very, very quickly, when a particularly violent offender was cornered in a sink estate, who was wanted for an attempt murder on one of his peers...

There he is stood in the garden, with other mates at his back, faced with possibly a dozen of us. He was stripped to the waste with the results of a previous six years of free prison gym, all greased up, waving a 30 quid Samurai sword around, threatening decapitations before popular on Youtube...

One was wondering whether it would be a dog handler or firearms officer who finished this. Gelid dead who turned up first really...

The the Duty Inspector came round the corner. A university type on the accelerated promotion scheme. But, he was a tad over 5 feet tall! So splendid in his cap, body armour and kit belt, which looked to have come straight from a "Tactical Barbie" set, nigh on goose stepped towards up.

The offender did a double take and said, "F*** me! Was circus school full?!" He then said to his cohorts in the house, "quick, someone throw some coins, he might dance for us!" Sniggers turned into guffaws, and the guv was not a happy man!

Then, the offender said, "I tell you what, I'll surrender, but only to Bilbo. Anyone else comes close, I'll kick off...."

And he did just that. The Inspector got one cuff on and the offender even ruffled his hair before the other went on! Now that was when I'd heard it all....

For months afterwards, everywhere that inspector went, somewhere would be the sound of money hitting the floor! Allegedly he transferred.
