Dress impressions

I'm probably not one of Mr Houghton's favourite people then. I wear German para boots (because they're hard wearing on my motorcycle, on country walks with the dog, scuffing about on the range). I wear some sort of drab khaki cargo style pants (because they're warm and have lots of pockets - useful for bikers and shooters alike). And sometimes I wear one of those old army olive jumpers (because they're warm and have pads in all the right places). Most of all though it's all cheap as chips and will last me years.
Why, anyone would think this gear were designed for shooting. Oh, wait ...

I'm sure if pressed Mr Houghton has views on how many rounds one can shoot per session - if more than thirty one can reasonably assume the shooter is training himself for the zombie apocalypse and not really a serious shooter. And, of course, the government were right to ban pistols - only cowboys and fantasists need a handgun. Obviously.

Interestingly a couple of weeks ago I was involved in a corporate hospitality day at Bisley for a City based firm and their clients.

On the next firing point to us on one discipline was a guy wearing camo-style trousers (not even real camo - just a weird camo type style).

But one of the guests who hadn't been here before said to me that he had been expecting to see people in full camo and balaclavas and pointed out the guy wearing the camo trousers. I hadn't even noticed as he looked absolutely fine to me but I explained that sometimes people would wear clothing suited for the conditions and some people would have ex-military gear if they had been in the military and he left with a much better attitude. However if the guy on the next target had been kitted out from top to toe in camo I might have had a far more difficult time explaining it!

Um I wouldn't even know that any of that was ex-military unless I inspected you very closely tongueout

And I often wear black but noone is going to think I'm a SWAT-wannabee :lol:

me too! the best pair of boots I have had in a long time, I have several thousand miles in all conditions on them bikewise, and have used them stalking through mud and flood, they are not in themselves waterproof, but with the addition of surplus goretex socks they do the job, and they are warm in the winter and don't cook my tooties in the summer

Whether we like it or not 'Public Perception' does matter.
I do not see the problem with one or two of ex Military jacket / trousers / boots but if all three are worn esp with beret or military style cap then you run into potential problems of:-
1) Looking like what I'm told is a 'WALT' 2) Giving the public perception that shooting is not 'Just another sport'.
As to those who dress to look like serving / ex military when they have never served, I completely agree with an earlier comment made by an ex military shooter.
We do not need 'Wanabees' or 'Neverwere's.' on the ranges.
