Every company is different. Mine has a 30 strong shooting club that we sponsor and meet every month. It wouldn't help you get a job but some companies are more shooting friendly than others i suppose.

I find it quite funny, this focus on only telling an employer what you think they need to know... Most of hiring someone is about seeing how they fit in the team. A CV listing a good bunch of the skills I've asked for is a given, the differentiators are things like hobbies because I have always found they give me a very good indicator of someone's personality. Certainly, if your hobbies lists 'socialising' and 'going out with friends', then that should be left off!

Yes along with 'listening to music' and 'reading'....however I have more real hobbies than I have the time or money for, so that section won't be 'light'...

I've made up my mind - I won't put shooting on any initial CV/application...and will only bring it up if it becomes relevant or adds benefit to them later.

Thanks again...I knew I could rely on you lot for advice :goodjob:

As a recruiter, if you've got time to read the full CV of every applicant for your vacancy I'd suggest that you're (a) lucky and (b) out of the ordinary given that the stats still suggest that the average employer spends 17 seconds on a CV. I think your final sentence touches on the challenge of listing hobbies and social interests which may appeal to one complete stranger but may be a complete turn-off for another?

Going back to my context which is based on plenty of experience (started work when I was 17, never been out of work and struck 59 yrs old yesterday) of being a successful applicant, a manager and a recruiter of staff, I'm now dealing largely with 18-24yr olds who sadly have little experience of work and need all the help they can get. For them, focus on telling the employer why they should be short-listed for the job is paramount. That's the way it is.

I personally wouldnt mention it.Some people are totally against guns and it could put them off...probably more so if you were applying for a job with Peta and listed deer stalking as a hobby.

Good point  - as it happens some of the places I'll send my CV will be environmental.....although with organisations like Defra or the Environment Agency it could actually be relevant depending on the specific post....still won't mention it though for now....

A friend of mine works in the biological sciences, and he reckons they carry out some fairly thorough due diligence on any candidate of theirs in case they have links to extremist organisations. Surprisingly (given that his work is miles away from pouring napalm on baby monkeys or whatever it is the nutters would have us believe) they do get PETA infiltrators etc applying for jobs with them.

Nothing to do with the CV - it's all Faecesbook and Twatter that gives them away.

And Tikka - you're right - the only job I was thinking of applying for that might consider it even a slight benefit is The British Antarctic Survey; as they like staff to have practical skills as well...but other than that I can't see why it would be a benefit to any others...

At the moment I'm thinking leave it off...but more opinion is welcome...
Although any polar bears that might require swift application of those practical skills tend to be found further north

The BAS do surveys in the Arctic as well - I know they have some guns on their research vessels, and would be surprised if they didn't have any at all at some of their Antarctic stations....

...at least I would hope they have - you just don't know what's under that ice...have you not seen 'The Thing'? :P
