I remember when I was a kid, back in the 1950's there was a "penny in the slot" type machine on Brighton pier that was much the same idea. A rifle on a swivel mount with basic open sights was lined up with a 10 bull card target, when the trigger was pulled there was a hefty clonk and the target was pierced with a spike about 2mm diameter. After the 10 shots the target was delivered down a chute to the shooter. Very accurate, as I recall, and I seem to think it was a meaningful rifle, not some plastic kids affair. (probable a surplus Jungle carbine )
